What bothers me more is why is the eagle and motto so white and shiny?

I see no evidence of environmental damage from the image provided, just a nice crusty honest coin. I kind of like it.

That said, if it bothers you even a little I would pass and wait for another. It needs to please you, not us.

As for the grade, F12 sounds about right.

There appears to be some green substance top half of the coin. Perhaps verdigris was cleaned off long time ago? PVC?

Nice coin with original surfaces. Reverse looks F-12. I like it.

Having an obverse photo would help in the grading. Reverse does look F-12. The coin does not appear to be cleaned. Not the nicest looking coin but if you like it and the price is right it's your call.

Thank you all for your comments and advice.
It's an 1878-CC.
I think the key to all this is "if I like it" and I think it's a bit distracting so I believe I'll keep looking.

1878-CC isn't your typical CC date. It's very scarce, especially, in decent condition. To give you an example, CAC stickered none in Fine; only 1 in VF; 1 in EF and none in AU. You can keep looking but quality examples for this date are few and far between.

Would have liked to see the obverse as well. The reverse looks around F-12.

Looks properly graded, but I would pass and be very picky with this one even if you have to pay up to do so

Many collectors of this series feel this is underappreciated compared to it's stud cousin the '78-S.

Does have a more "natural" look to it, I'd toss an F-12-15 with an old cleaning perhaps that doesn't detract.

If you like it, all's good!

Those who like circ cameos have different tastes for the sub-types and the amount of symmetry, contrasts, etc. like everything else in this crazy hobby.

Aside from the noncommittal cliche, I would probably pass, but not due to the spots.
