I agree for $10 bucks, I might finally figure out what to look for in a star quality dime. Thanks for all the comments and I will let you know!

It is my understanding that for a * designation for toning there have to be a number of distinct bands of color. It would be interesting to see what they say.

Coin has been received by NGC and has been "scheduled for grading". Hopefully, I will be able to update the forum in a few days. I also asked them to explain why it didnt qualify for the star. Stay posted!!

How would you know it didn't get a star if it has yet to be graded?

Thanks alot for the scare! I dont know if I expect it to get the designation, but I would really love to know what the graders are looking for. It is so subjective and what I have read, all the graders have to agree on the designation unanimously. If anyone disagrees, then it loses it. It is a really pretty coin, much better than the tiny photos that I posted. It has 3 rings in yellow, green and blue. It is also very close to FT designation, but weak on the right lower band and I think it will miss it. Will see in a few days.

Just checked the NGC website and the coin is already coming back to me. It didnt get a star designation, but hopefully, they will provide information as to why not. I should have known since it went through the grading so fast.

I dont understand why you would send in a 1968 unc dime to be graded. Even with a star it wouldn't be worth much. $10 is alot to pay for a very common modern coin with a face value of 10 cents.

It was graded ms67 previously by NGC. I am a registry set collector and was trying to upgrade an older slab. population of 19/0 at the grade. Hope that helps clear up any confusion.

Although the registry set world is one I don't inhabit, I do understand its appeal. Sorry about the star but I really thought the general rule of thumb was five distinct bands of color for star designation, but maybe they're not that rigid about it.

You should check out the registry! It is really so much fun. I have become hooked! I used to prefer raw coins, but now I am really wanting to spend some money to get all my stuff slabbed(Which is what they want I am sure).
