Yes you have good reason to be suspicious. Not a real 1914 D.

Thanks everyone for the bad news. It seems to be unanimous even this early on.
Rest in Peace

we can do nothing but pile on with more of the same. A very badly done modification at that!

The counterfeiter even took the time to remove the VDB below Lincoln's shoulder.

See those all the time on ebay trying to be sold as genuine.
There are at least a couple every week reported on our counterfeit forum.
At least they are easy to spot.

A little suspicious? I'll bet that all of his fellow counterfeiters spit on him and say
"You give us a bad name!"

Yep, altered 1944-D. Space between the 9 and 1 is too wide.

And as noted, not a good faked one either.

Might be nice to try and put together a collection of altered 1944-Ds -----> 1914-Ds. Of course I do not think any seller will let their "1914-D" go for a the price of a 1944-D.

I've got my own 14-D. Hopefully mine is genuine! I'll send a picture when the kids are asleep.

A collection of altered or fake '14Ds would indeed be quite something, but how on earth would you assemble it?

I broke the news. He suspected since Day 1, so he wasn't particularly crushed. He got a "good deal" on it on ebay, so it was an acceptable risk to him. He's keeping it as a hole filler for now.
