Do most of you break out ancient coins?

I do!

BTW, that is a super start.

I do like touching my coins, but I hardly ever open even 2x2s, and if I had an ancient coin in a slab I probably would've left it there. Doubt I can afford one, though!

I currently have three coins of the 12 Caesars; two of them appear to be the exact same type of Caligula (I should post them sometime, they're very different in size, but do appear to have the same legends), and the third is an utterly terrible quality Claudius as.

That's a really beautiful Augustus, though! And those two babies on the reverse are a nice bonus. (I wonder how old they were at the time...)

I break it free an then save the slab. Each serial number can be searched via their site (with pics) and you can examine the coin there. I believe you can also re-slab the coin at a discount (if need be).

Oh yeah, what a coin! It's absolutely beautiful.

Congrats

Very nice coin!

This is a type where the long reverse legend is so often not fully struck on the flange.

That's a good start to the set

That was a coin type that was really used... most of them are fairly worn, but yours has good luster left, and a really nice style portrait too!

That is a really fine example. As far as the slab goes, very few serious ancient collectors prefer slabs and they are not going to pay a higher price for a coin in a slab. It is of course your call but you will not lose money by breaking it out.

MartiVltori,

Good to know thanks. The resale aspect is what I was most worried about. I am in the process of cataloging my coins, what I paid, when I bought and in some cases I included what recent auctions of similar coins have gone for. That should help my family understand what I have in case something unfortunate should happen.

@canefan, I'm glad to see that you are recording this information for your family and the next generation of collectors. If I might suggest one addition piece of information for you to include, it would be the provenance (e.g. who all owned this coin prior to you).

Recording your coins is an excellent idea. I have a binder with sleeves. In each sleeve is a picture of the coin, the price paid, the date of purchase, the receipts, and any and all other information I have concerning the coin. At the front of the binder is a letter to my wife explaining all of the above and the names of dealers to contact and to send the coins to after I am gone. The last thing I want do is to burden my wife with disposition of my collection.
