I started to put a set together as a side project @ 2 1/2 years ago. Took me about a year of finding nice enough coins in PCGS MS62-64. The only exceptions were the 1914 P58 and 1911-D P55 as they were both great looking for the grades. It was a fun project, but I sold them all a few months after completion to make room in the SBD for a couple other purchases.

I have an almost complete set of gold Indians. I'm just missing the 11d. It's just too expensive for me right now. All of mine are graded by NGC problem free in AU-55 to MS62.

I did that a couple of years ago. The 11-D is AU-58 and the rest are 63-64. All NGC too.

I am considering starting a set of this coin but don't know enough about it to intelligently purchase my first coins. Can anyone recommend a book or information source I can read to get myself ready for this set?

Thanks!

There is not a lot out there that I am aware of. I personally found the book by AKERS useful, even though it was printed in 1975. It is hard to find, but here is one on ebay.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/DAVID-AKER...V:rk:18:pf:0

Having put 2 complete sets together, these are my comments and observations:
1) Since there are many fakes in this series, stick to TPG holdered coins by PCGS, NGC, and ANACS. NEVER buy coins in this series raw.
2) The early dates are tougher (1915 and earlier) than the prices seem to indicate. I would concentrate on these first, the later dates are plentiful and always available.
3) Be careful to get strong date 1911-D. These are not always noted on the holder.
4) The 1914-Philly is a tough coin and if you find one you like, buy it. I think the prices are undervalued in all grades.

Hope this helps. Good Luck

I agree with what jimbucks says.
I researched this before I started and decided to go for the 11-D first to get it out of the way.
Absolutely stay with TPGs. Due to the realitivly small amount of gold needed, they are targets of counterfeiting.
Buy as much grade as you can without ending up living from your car.
Keep the TPG you decide on matched. The full Indian QE set, if you are also speculating, is a very attractive, sellable set.

Right on with a strong mintmark on the 1911D. Do not buy a weak D. Although those are the rarer coin, make sure D stands bold.

Have fun

Jimbucks and Slapsshot...I was glad to read your comments on keeping the TPG matched for your set. I thought it was just my OCD coming out when I did that!

NGC holders makes gold look that much better in my opinion.

I started my $2.5 set about 5 years ago. After taking 3 years off from it, and posting on this site, I have returned. I recently picked up a 1912 and 1914D. My problem is $20 Liberty's keep distracting me.
