Interesting topic! My family knows I collect but have absolutely no interest in it and only a few chosen close friends know. As others have stated I also keep my collection in a safe. If someone wants it bad enough their going to have to get past the cameras and the dog first. If they can do that then Mossburg and Savage will join the party and we'll as a few throwing knives, a blow dart, and a taser and if they somehow survive that then they deal with a led filled Louisville Slugger! Good luck

Another frequently asked question is "Where do you keep your collection? The answer to this is ALWAYS "In the safe deposit box." Doesn't matter where you actually keep it, that is the answer. In fact it's a pretty good idea to work that in even if they don't ask.

I really enjoy talking collectables with people but that is limited to my other collections, not my coins or currency. If don't think eavesdropping crooks would even care about my postcard or art pottery collections.

Like many have said. Most of my friends and family know I collect. Only a few have actually seen it. Although, I am small fish really. Most of my collection isn't worth a whole heck of a lot per coin ( I haven't yet jumped into the really expensive stuff and I'm not the guy that needs to have MS 65 or even MS 60.) So I usually undersell the coin. Really it's the whole package together that really makes it.
So long story short, not so secretive but I'm not a blabber mouth either.

Only a couple of people know I collect. My mom is one of them and she may have either forgotten or told many others, as mothers tend to do. In any case, my collection is fairly low value, so nothing is in a safe deposit box. We may get a better safe soon and maybe the most valuable/dearest pieces will go into that. The concern here is fire first, and then tornado. Robbery is not a big concern living in rural NNE Texas because of the "friends" that most people have on standby. Still, I would rather not broadcast my collecting to others. This forum serves those purposes. Some of it is security (anonymity), but most of it is that very few people we know care anything about the hobby. This is where the real discussions and appreciations happen. Or, as Al Capone may say: "Enthusiasms."

Very secretive - especially on-line.
Heck, this isn't even my real name.
In fact, this isn't me even typing.
I would say more, but you know, it's a secret.

All of the above comments and statements ring true to me and have crossed my path at one time or another over the years. There's no doubt in my mind that each of our collections are worth much more to us them it's true numismatic value. Just for the record, I'd be lucky to get melt for my collection! Quote: Are you secretive about your collection... I don't really want to be but being from New York, I am. I guess it's call property (or self) preservation. However, embarrassment is probably a bigger deterrent as well. I think it started when I was a kid, when my parents said; "YOU SPENT HOW MUCH FOR A NICKEL?!?!?!"The few times I've told friends, they looked at me the same way I would look at them, if they told me they collected stamps! Have you ever been to a coin club or coin show? Have you ever actually looked at some of those people?.......that's not me! Glad to be here!

I see I am like a lot of you. My collection is worth much more to me than what it would bring on the open market. I don't advertise my collection for the same reason I don't show my bank balance to anyone. Money makes some people do strange things. Also, unless it's someone that also collects, most people don't care. I have a collection of antique anniversary clocks I have restored and are displayed working. The biggest comment I get is, "nice!"
I keep my coins in a fireproof box so I can look at them anytime I want.

The only one I tell where I hide my booty is my cat, and if you try to get her to talk , she'll rip your eyes out !

i talk about coins with friends. I show them pix of things I find or buy. I swap foreign coins with some. but no one has seen my 'collection'. unfortunate boating accident last spring put it on the ocean floor near half moon shoal and like an idiot I keep adding to it. I have a nine-foot pet shark- Mr Fizz- that keeps an eye on it for me.

Being secretive has far fewer problems, than keeping a firearm in the home. If you have a valuable collection, choose wisely when it comes to whom you speak to, regarding your coin collection. Even so, all of my significantly valuable coie been photographed. The pictures are maintained in much the same way as a coin album. It is the pictures that I show, and to whowm I decide to show them. The album of coin pictures has a label on the cover:_ "All of my more valuable coins stored at bank, that is why this picture album exists"
