Fakes like this are disheartening...

Yep.

How in the world did you recognize this coin from a 4 year old CNG listing?

I've made it a point to memorize every CNG listing over the past two decades.

But, seriously: the couple of times I've added coins to the Fake Reports there was a screw up that resulted in my personal email address, instead of my username (Robert L3), being posted in the listing - for all to see. Joe notified me the problem has been corrected, and his own name ended up under my entries (which is fine by me), but it's left me gun shy where uploading fakes to the Reports goes. So I'll leave this one to someone else.

That is such a good fake that I just can't believe that it really is. Although still a novice to the hobby, I've gotten pretty good at spotting obvious fakes and obvious genuine coins. I guess I need to redefine the obvious.

This would be classified as a "scary" fake

A quick search of Coinarchives uncovers the seller, and props to them for standing behind their sales. Given the quality of this fake I'm not going to hold it against them, and am eyeing some of their items in a future sale.

But I would really like to know who the base coin was sold to in Sept 2014, and where and when this fake started showing up.

This reminded me of a thread I read on another forum on new dangerous fakes were arising. Again, very convincing flow lines and overall appearance was extraordinary. Wonder if this comes from the same perpetrators.

Well, except that the coin in that thread was pressed from transfer dies whereas the one here would have to have been cast (given the identical flan shapes). Either way, scary. Fakers are getting really good at this stuff.

I sometimes wonder if we are helping them evolve with the "one and done" posters who post something for us to vet and then disappear. Although I've never seen them post anything beyond the garden variety tourist fakes and casts.

This documented fake was sold as genuine by a prominent European auction house in 2016 to an American collector for nearly 30,000 euros. I have been informed that as late as August of this year, the dealer was still refusing to make good on the sale. The link tells the full story but unless you read Finnish, you'll need to use the translate function in your browser. https://rahakabinetti.wordpress.com...ennosfarssi/

I can see where this coin would fool even the experts the details and patina are consistent to what the original would look like. It would be nice to know how it was determined to be fake.

To avoid tipping off the fakesters, the IBSCC usually keep their information confidential, available only to IAPN members. It would be nice if the information were made more accessible to the community but I understand their rationale https://www.iapn-coins.org/ibscc.html

I added over a thousand fake reports in the Forvm fake database for coins from a variety of the IAPN BOC volumes after we obtained permission from the IAPN to place them online. If you search for IAPN then you will see them there. It is primarily older still from the BoC but it is something.
