Looks EF to me too! Been trying to cherry one of those for months. Nice coin!

Thanks guys. And thanks for the tips, Classic. My problem is obvious -- I live in Washington state, where sunlight is as rare as a $10,000 bill. The nickel I posted is my only shield, but I'd love to see some of your more unusual examples!

Can you spot the issues?

The main issue is that it's not in my collection.

Looks like a lot of die damage, which was common with the rays die. That's a nice example of the early nickel!

Thanks! I think there are die cracks, small Cuds and maybe a struck through area on the coin.

Here's an image I posted in the The 88 Days of US Type (Dansco 7070) Part V! thread today.

Here are two 1867 Shield nickels struck from the same shattered die in early and late die states:

That's amazing CC. Not just the die cracks in the exact locations but look at that marker right at the top of the second vertical column on the shield, second in from the right.......identical!!

Now that is really cool. You must have been either incredibly lucky or incredibly vigilant to find the sibling coin!

USSID18, Good eye! That's an identical Cud on both shields.

krhudson1, It was part luck and part vigilance, I guess.

There are several Shield nickels with a missing leaf variety. Here is one with an arrow pointing to where the leaf should be:
