It looks like it *may* be a small date. Clearer images are needed for a more definite decision from me, at least.

The LIBERTY is also an important diagnostic, please post clearer pictures of the date and the whole obverse.

Based on the latest pictures, it looks like a large date to me.

Is this coin highly collectable? I think I read that the small date was more in demand I am not sure...

Looks like a large date to me as well.
Small dates are scarcer and would be worth a premium over face value.

With the new pictures, I reverse my call. Large date. The small date ones are the harder to get.

The large dates are common enough that they are only worth face value in circulated condition. The small date 70-S does carry a modest premium. Maybe $15-20 in higher circulated grades or $50 or so in uncirculated grades of 63-65. Ballpark numbers there...

@spruett001 on the ball with an encyclopedia of photographic evidence!! That's top-level testimony right there.

Nice thread. I enjoy learning about the modern variations that exist out there.

This is a large date for sure. Best way to identify for me is the 9. However, the corner of the 7 is a nice identifier as well - pending coin condition; you can generally spot a slice and sharp edge contact verses the small date having no slice and is rounded in the corner of the 7.

I just happened to have downloaded many of his diagrams for occasions such as this. Personally, I draw an imaginary line from the bottom of the 1 to the bottom of the 7 and then to the bottom of the 0. If that line is straight, it is a small date. If the line makes a V because of the lower tip of the 7, it is a large date.
