I thought it was a great deal too. Plus it is CAC approved, meaning some dealers might pay a premium for it.

I've had some people tell me it doesn't look AU, at least on the obverse. One person who looked at it in person said the obverse didn't look AU but the reverse did (had alot of detail). I think it is graded correctly and apparently so did CAC. The reverse does seem to have more detail and less wear than the obverse.

I've had people tell me the whole series is overgraded.

But I absolutely love the coin and have to wonder how the seller who sold it to me was able to make a profit when he sold it, at such a good price (Almost greysheet!)

Here's another question for you guys, if you don't mind..

Do you think throughout the coins life, it was set aside by a collector in the early 1800's in an envolope, stored safetly somewhere for over a hundred years?

I really like the look of it. You have to remember that everyone has an opinion that's different from another person so don't take it to heart.

Who knows where it was stored. Could have been in a purse, feel in between a floor board, the possibilities are endless.

"...stored safetly somewhere for over a hundred years?"

I've heard stories of this happening, as 18th-19th C. furniture often had secret compartments to store coins and valuables. A gold coin would be a perfect candidate--if that's what happened.

But if you think about it, it's amazing to think -- the coin is in incredibly good shape for being so old, of course, since the classic head series was so short with these, maybe they didn't circulate much after the series ended.

Here's a question for you guys. The coin is AU53 CAC NGC.
There is a interesating fact I learned about its supposed value. The other day, I looked up the greysheet price (dealers price) for an AU53 classic head quarter eagle 1834, in AU50 condition, it was around $1100.

Well, today I went to another coin shop, and the dealer there opened up the price sheet section of "Coins" magazine. He looked up the price, and for an AU50 specimen it said it was only worth around $980! How come? This doesn't make any sense, because the coins pricesheet is supposedly retail price and yet the greysheet is HIGHER than the Coins Magazine price! What gives?

I don't know about Coins Magazine, but the latest issue of Coin Values list the coin at $2000 in AU-50 and $2500 in AU-55 - that's retail.

Yeah, that seems more like it. Like I said I paid $1200 for it and its AU53 and I thought I got a darn good deal. No idea why Coins Magazine price is so low.

OldGold,
Maybe this dealer keeps an outdated Coins price listing just to back up his lowball offers on customer coins!

Or, it could be a misprint in a current issue. I've noticed a couple of typos in the Numismatic News monthly price list from time to time. I think you got a good deal on your Classic quarter eagle. It's nice!

Jaobler, thank you for the nice comment. I do also think I got a good deal on it, which is why I was surprised the price was so low on the Coins Magazine. I love the coin, I think it's a great piece. Funny. I took it into the coin shop there, and asked him "What do you think of this coin?" he said he wasn't interested in buying it because of the contact marks/blemishes on the obverse and that he didn't have any buyers for it. I told him I didn't want to sell it I just wanted his opinion on it. Then he took out an old copy of Coins Magazine when I asked his opinion on its value and he said $12,000. I told him I paid $1200 for it. This gave me a little chuckle as I pointed out he was looking up the price for the 1834 Turban head in AU50/53!

He then pointed out that in the Coins Magazine it was only worth $986 (I Can't remember the exact amount, but it was in the $900's) and that I overpaid. I pointed out to him the fact that the price listed was for AU50 condition coins, and that mine was a AU53. He told me that the next step up from AU50 was MS60. (I think He was ref erring to the grade in the magazine, it went from AU50 to MS60 as the next grade up; there was no inbetween AU53, 55, 58, etc)

I told him the magazine was probably outdated and asked if he had the current one. He did. He took it out, it was another Coins Magazine, and sure enough, the price was the same (or very close) still in the $900's. Very odd I thought.

Well, I took a look at my latest issue of COINS (August, not likely the most recent copy) and it didn't even list quarter eagles in it but then again, it is not nearly as comprehensive as some of the other price guides. I pulled out my most recent issue of Coin Prices (September) and it listed your coin at $965 in AU 50. Significantly different than Coin Values which list AU 50 at $2000. I prefer Coin Values over the other price guides that I have personally as Coin Prices (Coins) is bi-monthly and Coin Values ( Coin World) is monthly. Also, Coin Values updates their online value listings weekly.

My mistake, he had coin prices not Coins Magazine. Why is it only $965 in AU? Isn't that a bit on the cheap side?
Seems less than wholesale.
