This one is graded ms-62 by PCGS. Kind of makes you wonder again what % of Seated coins were well-dipped in MS grades. When you really think about the storage methods back then, there shouldn't be any blast white ms graded coins.

For giggles I pulled up an old Heritage auction for a PCGS XF45 for comparison. Guess which one is a ~$200 coin and which one is an ~$800 coin? https://coins.ha.com/itm/seated-hal...ot=1&x=0&y=0

Well, buy the coin, not the holder.

Those two look very similar, BH. But if a pro were to apply a well executed dip, I'm sure the first coin would look more like a ms coin. I think what fools us is the allusion that dipped coins create. Perhaps why most MS Seated coins have been dipped is due to collector expectations that MS coins should be blasty white and that there is less demand for crusty original MS examples like this one. On the flip side, another member had me totally fooled with a dipped au-50 1870CC Seated dollar recently. At fist glance it looked like a MS coin and given his portfolio, it wouldn't surprise me that he had such a valuable coin. Some well-dipped Seated coins with exceptional strikes continue to fool me.

Doesn't look mint state to me. Nice and original, but looks to have definite rub on breasts and leg. Seems like a blatant overgrade from PCGS....

I see no rub on the breasts whatsoever. That was the main reason I could agree with PCGS's assessment. I see slight discoloration on the cheek but I'm not sure that is rub. The knee is open for debate. The reverse I believe is a bad strike. The left shoulder and arm look untouched.

I see is a coin that has high point rubs (which could be a weak strike) but it looks nothing like an uncirculated coin should appear. I am not saying it needs to be white at all, but dirt and debris in protected areas, field disturbances coupled with zero luster says an AU55 grade here would be very generous.

Mike's the expert, but I'm amazed. So I was way low at EF-45, but 62? And if it's truly MS, why not 63? I don't see any meaningful field abrasions or distracting issues.

Coinfrog, that was my thinking in taking the first guess at MS-64. I have a XF-45 1853 half that is considerably more worn than Mike's. I have a 1858 MS-64 quarter that looks a lot like this half. I looked for reasons to grade it lower, but like you, I felt the abrasions and distracting issues weren't there. I found this coin very difficult to grade, and I have the same problem with most heavily toned original coins. For me, the crustier, the harder.

Grading coins from photos is all but impossible for me which I have definitely proven. After knowing the grade awarded by PCGS it is easier to accept. After all they have the coin in hand. It can be UNC but when you consider Surfaces(dirt and debris in the protected areas), Strike(poor),Luster( dull and lifeless) and Eye Appeal(poor) then you have a coin that is maxed out at MS62. It will be interesting what this coin sells for.
