Dollar Bill Stack / Paperweight

Interesting, but not enough to want one.

These lucite encased dollar stacks and coins seemed to be popular back in the late-60's to early 70's. A lot of those bill stacks are priced as if there is an actual stack of dollars in there. I'd be interested to break one open and see. If you can get one for cheap, could you not break it open then send the bundle to the Bureau of Engraving and Printing to redeem mutilated currency?

I'd like to get two of these bricks - one for my desk, and one to crack open for curiosity. Problem is, I've seen these stacks go for way more than the supposed value so even if it were 100 bills (and some people insist they are) and then I sent it to the BEP I'd still lose out.

FWIW: I have something like this - it's a single red seal $2 bill (series 1963-A) encased in plastic. It doesn't fit my colection (it doesn't have any advertising logos on it) so I don't need it. Maybe I'll send it into the BEP for fun. Except they say it can take up to 3 YEARS to process.

I was trying to be sarcastic. It would cost about $8 to mail this brick to the BEP and then I'd have to wait up to three years for them to process. Then, if I'm lucky, they would send me a check for $2.00. So, no, I won't really do that. But I am a tiny bit tempted to crack open one of those other bricks to see if they really have a hundred bucks in them. If so, then I would send that off to get reimbursed. But again, only if I got one for way less than $100.

Thanks for the info. I've seen these around and the vintage ones (not that they can ever be authenticated) sell at galleries for $$$. They sell on ebay for $50 - $150 depending... I'd go up to $20 if it were in good shape and had the 1969 series (which seems to be what the vintage ones used). Also, I found a company that makes these now and they are not cheap. They're used as corporate gifts etc. and go for about $20 each brand new (minimum qty 50 pcs) and the buyer has to provide the currency. That's not for me...

PS: My name isn't really @jeffbuckes - it's just a nom de plume I picked. I didn't realize there was already a "jimbucks" and "jbuck" on the forum when I registered. Maybe I should pick a new name to avoid confusion? But I'm still willing to thumb wrestle if needed.
