Looks like the zinc coating has been scratched and the steel underneath is rusting.

If you soak it in acetone, take before and after images. Not sure how this will react with a steel coin? You might test on a poorer example first to see what can happen first.

My theory is someone wrote on this coin to show where multiple die cracks were . problem is it would be hard to have die cracks on a steel cent as the steel is much harder than copper . Or just a child fooling around with a pen .

Maybe die cracks where the plating has worn off.

Now that it is enlarged, it might be a thread on the coin? If there is an indent below an area, then it would be a struck through. If there isn't it is just a thread. I found something like that before:

Help-With-A-1943-D-Steel-Penny I found it in a OBW roll back then. I wondered why is this so ugly. After looking closer, I could die it was a struck through thread coin. I left the thread in place and put it in a 2X2.

That's pretty cool with the thread still stuck to it. Thanks for sharing.

I'm with fioti. It looks like a stain to me. Note that it is also on the lower edge of the coin.

Edit:
The color of the coin looks a little off.

I think stained. Acetone probably won't help.

Think about it, since steel is harder than copper, wouldn't you think striking the harder metal would make the dies MORE likely to crack?

Cracks in the Zinc plating with the underlying steel now beginning to rust.
