Several times Coinfrog. The best visit was taking the steam train up from Carson City.

thq - I always drive up there when I'm at Tahoe. Quite a place. Especially fascinated by the cemetaries.

I've been making an annual spring trip to Tahoe for the last few years Coinfrog. Basque food at JT's in Gardnerville, a Reno Aces game, a trip up to Virginia and some window shopping in Carson City.

And a top-down Jeep ride to Truckee at 80 mph.

When I was in school, the Chronicle ran ads reading "Four Lanes To Reno", and we went over to get the rolls of free nickels. I walk into Harrahs now just to savor that embedded smell of stale cigarettes and ozone. The good old days. Downtown Reno is as interesting to me as Virginia City. Harolds Club is gone, but the old mural has been preserved out at the rodeo grounds in Sparks.

A good warm up for a trip is watching The Misfits and Five Against The House.

My favorite headstone in Virginia City -

Poorly buried

No one cried"

Not a surprising epitaph in Virginia City. The mines paid well but they were dangerous. They were deep and hot, with long elevator shafts and poor ventilation. Near the end of the bonanza period Sutro dug a 6 mile tunnel towards Dayton to drain the scalding water.

That is sobering. Such a contrast to the mini-theme park hype of the main strip.

For a long time it was a real ghost town. I think the tacky revival started in 1965, when The Charlatans played at the Red Dog Saloon. That kicked off the San Francisco psychedelic period. The Red Dog has a cc of the first psychedelic poster, hanging way up on the wall where no one can reach. It's worth more than any coin I own....interestingly one of their early spaced out songs was High Coin.....

Along the same lines as the Morgan bag, I found this V&T receipt in a shop in Carson City for $15.

It's signed by one of the Yeringtons - the prototype of the Cartwright "Bonanza" family of sons. To me it's worth more than the bag.

When you are in Virginia City, don't forget to stop in and say hello to the Silver Queen. She has a very nice collection of silver dollars and gold coins.

Seen this many times. It's actually something like 20' tall!
