Yes, the high quality numismatic items are in the vault, you have to request the item by country, denomination, year, and grade, and they will fetch it for you from the back (security reasons from the store). For hobby collectors this may not be acceptable to them as a method to do business and form a numismatic friendship or customer relationship. If you have taken any sales or marketing courses, first impressions are very important. Yes, the one or two ladies in front need to be more personable and smile more. At least look more welcoming at a minimum. A little more numismatic education for up front staff would be helpful also. Ian spends most of the time in the back of the business. The last Canadian Decimal coin I purchased a few years ago, Chris came out from the back, sold it to me, and we had a 2 minute chat before he rang it up. I was happy with the purchase and he was happy with the sale. Before that happened, I was last in line to 3 customers, 2 were sitting in front placing their order, and I was standing behind the gentlemen ahead of me. I saw bullion and NCLT transactions being perform. If you ever want to stop there and have a look at what is in the display cases, I would recommend that. Just be patient when your in line to place your order. My brother told me there is a massive amount of road work in front of the store, so wait till the season of construction ends. I have never purchased anything from them online, so no experience there. Personally for me, I have no issues buying Canadian decimals items from Gatewest, though I would not sell to them. I would buy from Al and sell my spares back to him and have done so twice in my collecting hobby. Now if you ask me why? Answer is, Gatewest business expenses looks a lot higher than what Al's are. So I believe Al would be able to make a higher offer on my spare coins than Gatewest. Expenses like the number of employees, carrying cost, store property managing expenses, etc. Quote:

The small looking shack like structure on the far left side of the building on the corner. I remember, it was a bit dark in there, it was cramped, and I could smell a little mildew in the air. I haven't figured out how to reply to a specific comment, but twoods, that's the point of my thread.

That's not what people are typically doing when visiting a LCS. if I'm looking for a specific high grade coin, maybe yeah, but as stated in my original post, browsing is how I end up spending my money. I'm interested in a bit of everything.

Point taken Canadapennies19...I just wanted to share that I believe Gatewest to be a treasure trove of items, and that I have rarely found a dealer to be fairer in terms of pricing...
I also wanted to offer that I have had a way better experience calling the store ahead to let them know I am coming, for example, I visited recently to look at raw silver dollars and by the time I arrived they had pulled out some great coins to hunt through (of course as you mentioned in your post I also ended up purchasing most of them!)
Either way, good point made, the local coin shop should make sure to keep that local coin shop feel to accommodate their valued customers

Gatewest has the volume but the customer service leaves a little to be desired. I like to browse but I also understand that they don't want unknown commodities picking through their coins. I tried to send them a list to fill out my 50 cent collection and it took a long time for them to get back to me. I finally got there to check out my picks and I found them pricey for what they were.
When I lived in Winnipeg I made almost weekly visits to Provincial and Al would get me out the boxes I wanted to look through and even asked if I wanted to see the 'good stuff'. I spent more than a few happy hours (and dollars!) browsing and building my collection there.

Living two provinces over, I have only dealt with them by phone for coin supplies and post 1966 coins like 50 cent pieces and coins like 1997 quarter not issued for circulation and that type of thing. Helpful by phone and orders processed accurately and delivered in a reasonable amount of time.

I have bought from Gatewest 3 times in the last few months. My buys have always been on-line, so, have never dealt personally with anyone, but my dealings have always been satisfactory. I have the uncanny knack of usually always making my purchase decisions after the RCM silver coins are sold out at most vendors. They are probably my last resort, but often have my coin even if a little overpriced. That is likely my penance for procrastination or (penny wise - pound foolish). Their delivery charges are quite fair considering the recent circumstances. |

Quite a bunch of ebay transactions ,a few phone transactions and a couple website transactions and all went very well .No trouble whatsoever and been very fair on the pricing ,even taking some lower offers. |

I buy from many sellers. Only had an issue with 2 or 3 out of 100's. So about 1%. I offered over 80% asking on a Gatewest listed item and they didn't counter. Simply refused. Why bother accepting offers?
I was under the impression that new clients should be treated with respect because you don't know how much money someone has. From the beginning I did not have a good experience with this seller. It's disappointing because they do have good pricing on some items. They've blocked me from purchasing and at first I was mad but now I am grateful. I have since discovered new sellers with better prices.

At Gatewest coin, I offered to sell my 2 gold, 1 ounce wafers and they offered less for each wafer. So I went to KMG Gold, just down a few blocks and received a better price, which was $70.00 more.
Also, the price/ounce on Gatewests' web page was reasonable, but when I sat in the chair they gave me a poor offer.
And the man at KMG was lots friendlier.

I went in again recently to pick up some bullion for the stack. They have competitive prices so if you know what you want and want it now they are a good spot. They do seem to do brisk business so, especially during the pandemic, its not really a place to go and chat and learn.

If you are looking to purchase from them online, be prepared for a long long wait. I ordered coins on June 2, 2021, and as of yet they are only in Chicago (they still have more than 1000 miles to my home), with no movement for three days. This is how one learns I suspect, and I have learned not to order from them again.

It might not be their fault for the slow shipping. I'm in Winnipeg also and we recently shipped a package and it was also stuck in another city without going anywhere.

Yeah sounds like a USPS problem not a Gatewest problem.
"Dipping" is not considered cleaning...
