And I know where you can find a safe that was once owned by Al Capone. I'm sure it is full of rare coins. Just ask Geraldo.

The seller is swearing at me now so I reported him on that and the coin being a fake. I hope that helps to shut him down for a bit. He had the audacity to tell me one of my items was a fake....a comic book....one that is graded by CGC and encapsulated in one of those heavy duty holders. I just told him to have a good day and hopefully his item and himself were removed soon.

It's critical that all forum members post items that appear to be counterfeit so the rest of us can evaluate and report them as well. Repeat offenders will eventually be banned on ebay.

Too many illegitimate coins appear so frequently that it would be a 70 hour a week job to nail them all.

Quote: It's critical that all forum members post items that appear to be counterfeit ... Well I'd like to, but I no longer use ebay. For anything. My suggestion is that no one else use it.

Who was the seller, was it that "found in 200 year old safe" guy, TheDocktor or some such? I grilled that guy once on a fake coin, and he kept coming back w/ non-responses like "yep, I'm just a nice old retired guy, found 'em all in this old safe..."

ebay is a perfectly fine source for buying coins and paper money. Know your subject and choose a dealer with high positive feedback and full return privileges.

A few legitimate B&M shops come to mind when I read about these ebay safes. One is long gone Alpine Coin in Portland, which had three ring binders full of French coins. But two of them are still around, and worth a visit. Falcone Coin in San Jose, and Paul Bosco in New York City. You never know what they'll dig out. Always pot luck.

The seller was ckin7142 He has a good rating but the guy definitely knew he was selling a fake in my opinion when conversing with him.

The original 200 year old safe guy, thedockter, has his 1795 flowing hair dollar trading above $1300 right now. I'm also watching an 1871-cc half eagle that came out of the safe, which is now nearing $2000.
His feedback is pretty good, but there are some pretty nasty comments in the negatives and neutrals about substitutions, bent coins and extreme overgrading. It looks like the 200 year old safe is a gimmick to perk up the bidding action on no-minimum auctions....similar to the rolls and jars....
