Paypal CANNOT take funds from your linked bank account without your authorization.

That is correct.... but they used to.

so is there anything that people can do about this type of emailing fraud. Is there a site you go to post the persons return email address so that other people can check and see if it's a fraudulent emailer?

There may be, but they're all worthless. From email addresses are usually fake on these type of emails. I could send you an email from Pope@vaticancity in about 2 seconds.

lol that's terrible! I just don't understand how they work it? I send a request funds from paypal. The send me a fake email from paypal saying the payment is made. But, obviously I am going to log in to paypal to be sure. So how do they actually make any money from people? They just hope for the people that won't actually check their real paypal?

You go to the link in the email and it lands on a page that looks EXACTLY like a Paypal login page. But it's not, it's their page. If you log in, they have your password and they can send your money anywhere.

Don't blame Paypal, it's not their fault.

G'day,

- YES, PLEASE !!
Please include the following:
"All is forgiven.
Have reserved a villa for you in The Garden, overlooking Lake, and with views of the mountains. There is a short walk to the Surf Beach.
This will not be available for the next 100 years or so.
Please keep up the good works where you are."

Feel free to add, if you think I've missed any key points.

It is not just the Paypal site that gets duplicated... Bank web sites are commonly reduplicated to gain information and well as ebay!

People will steal your ebay password and place stuff you don't have or own for sale to ruin your name.

One has to use a LOT of common sense when working ebay and Paypal.

I never leave any money in Paypal... after a sale, I push it into my bank account.

One should change their password about every 60 to 90 days on both ebay and Paypal.

I use the military standard of at least:

two upper case letters
two lower case letters
two special characters
two numbers

I actually use three each of the above when I can.

This SHOULD keep most hackers at bay... the real problem is when people are tricked into giving up the information.

Never, never, never divulge personal/private information to a site contained in an email link. Always use your browser to use the bookmarked link or enter it from the browser (don't cut and paste from the email). The sophistication of modern scammers makes this absolutely essential!

Also most PayPal users require shipping only to the PayPal verified address. Shipping to a non-verified address is 99.9 % disastrous.

Everyone should be educated about social engineering. Further research can be found at sans.org.
