Ike Dollars Vs. Thalers, What Would You Do?

wwhitman - I welcome another Thaler fan. The more the merrier!

In all honesty, I don't think that i'll get over face from the particular shop where I may spend them. This is due to the fact that I have received them as change from them over the past few years. In fact, my change was $3 a few days ago and I was handed 3 Ikes. This shop is one of the main entrepos for coins in this part, so they see a lot of stuff and have an understanding of their relative scarcity. So I won't be losing money if I spend them there. It just seems to me that a lot of recent US coins are so overinflated in their value anyways, so they otherwise would probably circulate (If it weren't for the inconvenience of spending huge coins).

Yeah I suppose that I'll spend them since in the long run one nice coin will be much more of value and unique than a bunch of beaten up Ikes.

Zohar444- well it is still a bit up in the air what i'll get with my Ikes & such. There is a nice 1865 Bremen Thaler in EF at a local shop that I've had my eye on. I'll report what I decide to get.

I actually already am a bit of a Thaler collector (Though I do dabble in a bit of everything), but very few seem to pass through this part of the States.

vermontensium- that is so true. It is more worthwhile to have one great item than a huge box of junk.

vermontensium- yeah I really am becoming more and more of that opinion as time goes on. I like to keep one P and one D cent and every other denomination each year, but I know that they will not be worth anything for, well, centuries due to the huge mintage. I like new coins for continuity of a series, but beyond that, they pretty much are just junk. There really is no reason to save 10 BU rolls of each State Quarter haha. So i'll dump my junk for face and get a nice coin that will actually appreciate with time and has historical significance.

Yeah, not a Thaler (since they tend to be rather scarce in these parts), but still quite nice in my opinion.

So what do you guys think? Would you agree that it is an EF?

Zohar444- thanks! I got this one with the Ikes and my hoard of SBAs, so it cost me about $130, which is not a bad price for such a high grade. Well, keep in mind that these are very small coins (in fact only 1.69 grams), and that they are probably counterfeited like mad as well. I don't actually know of any online stores, I'm sorry to say. My best advice is to just keep your eyes peeled the next time you are at a show or decent local shop. Sorry that I really can't be more help on this, but I really do encourage you to become a fellow addict of Colonial Spanish coins (Though my coin was struck in Madrid from gold shipped to Spain from the colonies).
