Sounds like you're positioned to get a good return on your investment. Congrats. So, do I understand correctly that both coins have been in the soft plastic flips ("...not intended for long term storage") since 1988? If so, I wonder if the damage on the RIC-I-296's obverse might be related to this(?).

Both are super examples. I wonder what folks here would do with the rust stain. Is it better to remove it or just leave it and not potentially also remove the earthen encrustations?

Bob, I can't believe these were actually sealed in this thing since 1988. But, no visible damage though, the listing in the catalog said that it had "Bankers's marks and deposits" so it was there already. The original lot also had another coin, RIC - 361 but that one was conveniently taken out of the holder.
Spence, I'd be afraid to remove that deposit, but man, I wish it weren't there.

Both portraits are superb. What an awful decision to have to make.

Great portrait coins are always nice to have I don't believe a long term bath in distilled water could do any harm at all As long as you don't pick away at it ! Use nothing more abrasive than gentle dabbing with a Qtip and no harm will be done
A quick pre-rinse in acetone won't hurt either

RVFVS, if I keep that one I will take your advice. Has that ever worked completely?

Well it doesn't really need to work completely although given enough time I'm sure it would But a year or two should show some improvements Patience (as always) has its rewards
And as mentioned It shouldn't do any harm

I wanted to post a follow up, I did sell the Octavian as Augustus, 27 BC - 14 AD. M. Durmius. Denarius (Honos) on consignment (Bob thanks for the tip, I did go with FORVUM). Quote: ...Sounds like you're positioned to get a good return on your investment. I did extraordinarily well, as it sold for even more than the examples that I researched. I am now well funded for more coinage. It was hard to part with it though , WOW what a beautiful coin.

Congrats, TC. Good for you. They (FORUM) will be - hopefully - listing a few more of my Parthians soon. (And an additional one will go through an upcoming CNG feature auction, CNG 115) This round was hard to part with - like your coin was for you. But, like you, I'm looking to reinvest in new acquisitions - in my case it'll be ancient weapons or pottery.

Glad you did well with selling the coin. I can never bring myself to part with any of my coins, it's not so much that I have very rare examples its just I know that I would regret it late. It's happened to me before.

Hunting for the coins is really half of the fun I have adjusted from being a covetous acquisitive collector to having two collections One I consider permanent or rather semi permanent I use the 'upgrade' excuse to justify the big expenses Occasionally something must go for replacements to occur Although I have two nearly identical sestertii of Elagabalus ! Still can't decide which one to keep 7 years on The other is the collection in flux Some go but then more come in Lacking a stupendous income compromises need be made But it keeps me out of trouble (and bankruptcy !)
No matter how much we love our collections we know we won't be owning them forever Although the thought of carrying a few on in pocket has occurred to me ! My philosopher daughter has expressed interest so I promised her some of the good stuff My video game addicted son ? (he's 15) Fahgeddabouditt ! The wife ? She finds the whole idea of me spending money quite disturbing .........
Hopefully my daughter Anna absconds with the whole lot of them

Bob wish you well on your sales. Yes it's hard to part with pieces of our collection, but I think its good practice to cash in on some of your finds. I say this only because I've seen coins that come on to the market labeled "ancient coin" or "unidentified" that have sold for a fraction of what they are worth. This has scared me into taking inventory on my coins and instructions of where and how to sell them (if they wish to). Quote: Hunting for the coins is really half of the fun
Yes indeed! It's in an excel spreadsheet and it automatically calculates the totals - it's a great tool.

That looks like a nice tool travelcoin. Do you build it yourself in Excel or is it downloadable somewhere?

It was a template. I can't remember the exact name, but if you have Excel go to:
1. New 2. search templates and type in "Bathroom Remodel" its a very good one and I'm using that one as well.
