Hope this photo helps. Its PCGS trueview. I took away the certificate # just for the guessing. Notoriously difficult to grade.

with Nickelsguy. I could easily grade this, with the coin in hand...

Was this a slider or are the experts saying this is a solid MS63 weakly struck?
Personally in the hands of ICCS this would not pass AU50.

Too many dings for 63. I have seen au in ICCS 65 holders......20 years ago maybe even 15, Brian at ICCS had a grip on this series. Since then....no better than anyone else. 50-50

I am not familiar but how were these coins distributed from the mint in the 20's to banks and people?

Typical grade for PCGS, ICCS would have graded it AU58

Quote: Typical grade for PCGS, ICCS would have graded it AU58 Go back and reread Nickelsguy post... you are making assumptions without the coin in hand. If there is no interruption of lustre, then ICCS would also give it a MS-62 or MS-63 grade. I have lots of examples of mint state weakly struck 5c coins, in ICCS holders.

Hey guys,
My idea about this coin is this...it sold for about 2300 canadian. Way below a true MS63 graded coin I think. I also believe the bidders could see through PCSG trueview the actual photos in real high definition. The crown area where the beads are missing appears like there is wear...shoulder area also looks about the same with wear.
I am also not sure when this coin was graded based on the certification numbers but grade inflation could have played a factor given the low mintage and key date attributes.. I would also assume, crossing over to ICCS this will not pass AU58 either.

Yes - but PCGS had the coin in hand, while the armchair athletes here did not. PCGS might be more generous with circulated strikes, but they are pretty strict with mint state grading.
Unless you can demonstrate a clear interruption of the cartwheel lustre - it is impossible to assume what ICCS _might_ grade it. The weak elements the others are seeing here, are the result of a weak strike, which BOTH ICCS and PCGS know how to grade with mint state coins.

SPP-Ottawa consider me sort of like the armchair athlete where I am fairly new on the coin collecting (5/6 years +)....
You are right that not having this coin in hand makes it much more difficult to assume what is inside the capsule.
I had this coin on my watch list from start to finish.I just dont feel that it was properly graded ( assumed opinion ) and I had my gut feeling telling me this was a slider so I left it at that. I only brought this to you guys attention just to see what the reaction is.... I am glad I followed gut feeling. I think something is missing from the MS63. The edginess is not there, luster is questionable. Not worth the gamble although lucrative for the key date rarity.

Like any coin, eye appeal is everything, and at the end of the day, buy what you like....

A high AU perhaps, but I don't believe for a second that it is a true MS coin. The seller was the winner on this one.

AU58 would be my guess too.
