The common joke at coin shows used to be,
"The only thing scarcer than NFLD coins, are NFLD coin collectors"
That said, top ten pieces are always fought over in auctions, and in some cases, Trends or Charlton's does not matter. Eye appeal, desire and demand are the driving factors...

Even in Europe NFL is discovered, especially the better grade 50 Ct and gold pieces.

With permission, I snapped some photos above at my LCS today to show you guys the state of the market out west here. Stuff is not even moving at half anymore. Most of the world coins are now priced at a percentage over spot, the owner doesn't even bother taking the time to look in the krause, just spot +. With most of the coins and paper money now in his store being spot + a percentage or % off of trends or face + a few bucks. It is a worrying trend that has been developing over the past few years I have been noticing. Higher percentage discount from informed dealers when they are selling and a lower buy rate overall. Don't get me wrong, no one will be going and selling 1948 dollars at half trends anytime soon but I could see 20% off coming shortly if not already in some situations and dedalers etc.

@47P7 surprisingly you are not really that unrealistic at that level .
The $2 Pieces are really popular right now if nice and do sell well .
@ YEG proves nothing as I stated earlier show me a nice parcel of
Properly graded Vicky and Edwardian at those levels.
The pix are of what dealers call mature or very tired stock .

The ICCS stuff is probably stuff that shouldn't have even been graded in the first place. I'd have to agree with Pac and I would add that with the pandemic I've seen a huge uptick in prices for lower grade key date stuff.

Would you be willing to post or pm/dm me the name of the LCS from which you snapped those photos. I'd be happy to pay 50% trends for a few Silver Dollars I am missing. Even if they don't have an online presence, my brother lives in Edmonton and can probably pick stuff up for me.

Hi Danny,
I'm pretty new hear too, so I can't DM you either. Perhaps it can wait until one of us hits 100 posts, unless you post the LCS name in the forum. I am not in a rush to buy, but I always do a bunch of price shopping before I do.

Danny, The other option is to have a moderator act as a go-between for us. If there is a moderator willing to do so then we could exchange information. Back to the topic: If the Charlton Catalogue prices do not reflect reality, then the Charlton Guide (prices at which dealers buy) does not either. The guide would then have the potential to completely mislead collectors trying to sell their coins. If both were appropriately adjusted downward to actual market levels, then maybe the hobby in Canada would be better off. This doesn't seem to be an issue with US coins (I collect some of these) and the US coin market. Prices in the USA RedBook don't stay artificially high, and there are dynamic price guides (Like the PCGS Coinfacts one) that seem to adjust to prevailing market conditions (by taking into account prices realized at auction, or a survey of a bunch of dealers, presumably). Yes, I know we have Coins and Canada, but competitive, proper pricing doesn't seem to be a thing among major coin dealers in Canada (oligopolistic behaviour perhaps?). |

your dealer let you take pictures of stuff he wants to get rid of, as Pacific said... stale and old and most likely came to him with other stuff, better stuff.
he could not exist as a business if that is all the low end stuff he has. IMO it is just the stuff he is willing to part with "easy".

There are not that many coin stores in Edmonton... should be easy to figure out...

National Pride (Ray) never used to have online sales... he was ready to retire when I moved from Edmonton 10 years ago, but when I popped by the shop a couple years ago, there he was.

I prefer Canadian Coin News for a more comprehensive list of trends based on coin grade.
Recently I also started checking the coinsandcanada website more. A few years ago I would definitely have said that the trends listed there were overpriced, but recently, they seem to have adopted the practice of extracting data from auctions. While they limit themselves to a very stratified sample of auctions, they provide a nice starting point at least.
