Nice!...acidic!...I was thinking 31s when I bought it. I never would have paid $55.00 for a 31 D mint. Personally, I think I could have got a nicer one for $15 to $20...I got burned, simple as that. I gotta get a Tums.

I was trying to be nice, some of you guys are ruthless. It is about a $20 max coin, but as long as the buyer is happy with it then it does not matter what he paid. You learn as you go with this hobby. If you do your DD before buying a coin (ie:check completed listing on ebay, graysheet, heritage etc..) you become a more educated buyer. I have a whole box filled with beginner buys from ebay, I keep most of them to remind me of how far I have come along. Acidic- next time you are looking for a cent try the "want to buy" forum here. Some of us (I know I do) have multiples of many Lincolns. I do stand by my previous statement that a 31-D is hard to find, be it in BU condition. I know I looked months to find one for my collection. I think I got one for Thad also, maybe it was a 30-D.

When I bought the coin, I knew one of the 31's was a semi-key but I didn't know which one...I took a chance and came up craps. One of the few coins I bought at a coin shop. While buying on e-bay, you have the books on hand.

Note to self...carry your books with you always!.

Can you go back to the seller, and discuss it with him/her?

Yeah, but I won't. I'm thinking of gluing it somewhere where I'll have to look at it every day. A physical reminder to be aware that there are people out there that are willing to take you if you let them.

So you paid too much. Live and learn. Not the seller's fault.

Positive (IMHO) is I've thought that particular date has been under rated for years.

Treashunt: It's on the clembo "sleeper list".

clembo, I know you work at a coin shop. Honestly, would you even list this coin at $55.00. There is no doubt in my military mind that he knew that coin was way, WAY over priced. It was presented in such a way as to be believed it was a semi-key. If I had my book with me I would have seen that the key was the S mint. I don't say its blame I put on the dealer, but shame. He really did himself a dis-service though. I spend a lot of money on coins and now he has lost my business and the business of everyone I talk to about him (if I choose too, right now I don't choose too). Still, when all is said and done, its MY fault for not doing my due diligence. That doesn't mean I not above going over there and, maybe take up some of his time asking stupid questions and generally being a pain in his back side for a while. "You shouldn't sell the new Pres. dollars 'cause In God we trust is not on there." (I know its on the edge). I'll have to think of some more annoying questions.

What questions about coins really annoy you?. C'mon, I need some ammo.

A.

Don't beat yourself or the dealer up over this. The $55.00 asking price was high, but open to offers I'm sure. Looking at the coin again, I'd go EF40 money for sure. That still puts it at $25 though.

Want to feel better? I bought a raw '09-S last year for $225. It was advertised EF/AU so the price looked good. After further review (me stewing over a loupe for a week) I concluded it was a cleaned VF/EF worth maybe $150. I learned from it and the coin got a lot of freash summer weather this year and the cleaning isn't so noticeably but I'll likely never get $200 out of it if I want to sell.

Moral to the story - Skip the crazy glue and start cheap, learn to grade, and carry a Greysheet!

I picked up a great deal on a 31D yesterday off the Bay. Its a High end AU, if not MS. I paid $8. Its in a knock off slab, but that dont mean the coin isn't nice.

You live and learn. I'm sure your over it by now. Never stop studying grading for all coins as well as diagnostics for keys and you will be armed with a good base of knowledge eventually.

That is an incredible deal! Can you post a link to the auction?

I bought an '11-S last spring in one of those "knock-off slabs" too. It was graded AU50 but is probably EF40/45. Anyway, I got it for $70 and cracked it out and it looks great!

I'd post some pics but haven't figured out the "Insert Photo" thing here yet.

Grading had nothing to do with it. I misidentified the coin. Thought it was the semi-key. Grading skills=good...coin ID=bad.
