Light wear, lots of luster disruption in the fields, distracting gouge.
AU-50 seems about right.

By the way, what's up with the N of UNITED?

This is a HM-8 which it is suggested is one of the final half eagle varieties struck during the year. The top of the letter N in UNITED is broken and filled in, the latest stage of deterioration in this area seen on coins struck from Reverse A. The workhorse Reverse A struck a total of seven varieties in 11 pairings (including remarriages) among Classic Head half eagles dated 1834, 1835 and 1836. So this reverse die was reused again the next year!

Maybe this is a case where the coin was cleaned 3 years ago and has now toned back to a more natural look. (?)

More likely an indictment of my photo skills.

looking at the TV (which one should not grade from) AU50

AU-58, bordering on MS-60+. Too bad about the gouge and the rim ding but, otherwise, nice gold coin for it's age.

It's Survival Rate is significantly higher than an 1834 in higher grades according to PCGS.

ps: I realize that I'm a bit high but, my gut experience says that this coin has been graded a bit higher than most of our expectations. We'll see...I may eat some crow with this one!

Slider 23 is a winner. This was graded AU-53. Considering the rim ding and field hit I was expecting a 50. I purchased it in the early 90's as a VF/XF.

Hey, I protest the winner

I had
looking at the first set of photos AU55
looking at the TV (which one should not grade from) AU50

that nets out to AU53. I claim co-winner status
