My bank hasn't done anything different as of yet. Fed chair announced this shortage on June 17th to Congress so it's relatively new. What I do know is that banks want to make sure they have enough coin for their commercial account holders and are using this as an easy excuse to shut down roll hunters and regular customers.
Of course the shutdown would limit people access to coin counting and sorting machine's and this will temporarily cause a shortage due to the supply chain being interrupted the normal circulation of coins basically stopped.
However the mints used for coinage making didn't shut down neither did banks or armored carriers. As far as that's concerned they all just tightened up.
Banks are still scary about people. So I think, considering it was announced to Congress 2 days ago. The banks are using it as an excuse, or maybe being preemptive, and cutting of giving out change to no commercial customers that need the change.
It really makes no sense the fed changing banks coin orders and sending them less. The banks and the armored carriers know what your bank needs and normally uses. The Fed shouldn't even be involved anymore really except oversight, they outsourced it to the armored carriers in 2010.
I am sure there is some level of interruption that will be temporary but I think this is media hype and banks overblowing it out of an abundance of caution to make sure they have what the commercial accounts need.

I think Jbuck hit the nail on the head! I feel there are multiple reasons for shortages. I know from my work that some of the armored carrier locations have been hit hard by the covid virus and are very short staffed. Services have been cut back to account for the staff decrease. Currency beats out coin as an essential service and most of the priority is focused on maintaining a steady supply of paper notes versus coin. Also, when most of the banks closed their lobbies off besides appt only, I'm betting much of the excess coin was shipped back to the Fed or armored carrier acting on behalf of Fed for particular regions. If anything, there would be a coin surplus seeing as how demand has dropped off a cliff, besides commercial customers. As far as customers turning in coin, I don't believe this is a big impact. For most of us, our everyday coin goes into a jar/container which we roll when we reach a certain amount . I bet the Fed has limited their services to mostly currency as well. Just my Two Cents....

Hi,
I was able to get $10 of penny rolls this afternoon at the bank inside the big box store. The staff was nice, but $10 was all they would let me have . I asked about coin shortage & hey said all is well. Found a 29-p, 46-p. a 46-d with some nice luster & a 56-d.

I have been to my local bank and they won't give me any more rolls to search. They aren't getting rolls from the fed anymore. Covid has taken all my coin collecting away. Can't CRH, and my LCS has been closed for 3 months.

Picked up a roll of quarters yesterday at my trusty branch--solid 2020 D American Samoa (National Park). Nearly all in the MS62 range--characteristic dings and hits accumulated through jostling from the mint through distribution operations. One was a solid MS64.

Don't count on the Fed for rolls because they don't come from the Fed. Coin comes from local couriers.

Quote: You still got us though Very true. I have been buying on ebay a little, but it's nothing compared to going to the LCS.

That is truly odd. I'm not far from Detroit and our crew (20) have been inside homes and businesses since the start. Not one case of sickness that we've heard since day one.

One of my banks closed in May. My other bank told me today they can not sell me any coin rolls.

Could be asymptomatic and unless you get tested you never know for sure. https://www.nbcnews.com/health/heal...-10-n1232134People are unknowingly infecting other people in large numbers. This vastly increases the chances that the high risk individuals will get infected.

Quote: Why bother getting tested if I'm healthy? Exactly. Now they are saying we have to change that thinking. "If you want to get back to normal, get tested." Quote: I believe I had CovId last January, a cough that lasted for three days. If I thought I had it I would go out of my way to get tested for the anti-bodies. If I had them I would hope it meant that I was neither at risk or posing a risk. It that were the case, I would get back out into the real world.
