This one came back from PCGS with Details, altered surfaces, and they still haven't released the trueview for some reason.

You ain't kidding Coinfrog, looks like it is time to switch to NGC for all of my grading, PCGS is just being rediculous on some of these coins.

With respect, I ask - do you think that venturing beyond your field of expertise (small cents) may have contributed to mis-judging some of these coins because of your lack of experience?

Quite possibly Coinfrog, hard to learn till you hold a bunch of them though sadly. The 1828 half dollar seriously boggles me what they are seeing as damage though. And from the definition of altered surfaces, something was added to this coin to hide imperfections, which I did not see any evidence of.

KY, do you have any idea why PCGS gave the coin altered surfaces? The reverse looks like it may have been lightly wiped because of the hairlines. If you do decide to send the coin to NGC for a second opinion, please keep us informed.

I'm late to the party here. Looking at the reverse, the horizontal lines in the shield and the inner left wing feathers (our visual right) seem a bit weak, and could possibly show signs of buffing. The eagle's right wing and the olive branch have different reflectivity than other central devices. Just a question, but could PCGS have seen something in these elements suggesting to them that someone tried to enhance the central design contrast with the fields, in an attempt to pass it as a CAM?

I'm not sure I would agree with that assessment, but I wonder if that is what PCGS thought.
