Have fun looking through the coins. How much did you paid for them, if you don't mind me asking?

Fun find. This is just my opinion... They might be worth more to some if they remained intact, but I would have to open and look at the coins!

Thanks for all the replies. Still nervous about opening them though. I paid $30 each for them, so figured that was a pretty good deal. Still very new to collecting....

1. be careful the bags are probably worth a few bucks themselves empty and in nice condition. 2. what year are they? The picture doesn't show it. that said this is what the 1999 bags I think look like. 3. 1999 SBAs can be struck on the wrong planchet for the 2000 Sacagawea dollars. and if there it would be found int he P bag. there's also uncentered broadstrikes to look for, clipped planchets, double struck in collar, or cladding problems that may or may not turn up if you open them. Finally, Hopefully you didn't spend much more than face value, because in the end, each one is worth $1.00. $50.00 total unless something extreme turns up. You can get a couple dollars or for each with plenty of time and effort selling them on ebay or something if they are in really awesome condition. mayb e up to $5.00 each. I don't kknow if it's really worth the work to do that though. Maybwe coudl get $50 a bag unopened, or $75 for the pair unopened on ebay if you paid close to face of course.

I have a pair of these myself and choose to keep them as is. I think there might be a bit more collector value in leaving them sealed since there was not and still is little interest in SBA dollars. I think they contain 1999 dated SBA dollars because the earlier dated SBA from 1979 80 and 81 were packaged in $100.00 bags for use in commerce. These were made up for collectors and there are other type coins marketed in the smaller bags for collectors as well.

Fun topic - let us know what you decide to do. If you do open them, I wish for you that there are a few choice BU examples worth some premium and the wild hope that one of the known errors mentioned by Big-Kingdom turn up. As a treasure hunter myself - I could not resist opening them to see what I can find - just saying.

It is VERY tempting, thinking maybe keep one in intact and open the other

If you do decide to open the bags the first thing to do is make sure you have a pair of cotton gloves handy (these are usually white). Any finger marks appearing on coins is an instant detractor to collectors.

They are almost certainly 1999 bags. The mint didn't start selling roll and bag sets of coins until then. Frankly they might bring more selling them unopened. There are often people who dream of searching unopened bags and rolls and bags to find a treasure who will pay silly money. (even though the odds of finding a treasure are horrible.) Checked out the sold prices on ebay. Individual bags seem to go for $55 to $60, two bag sets $75 to $90. I don't think I'd open them.

I'd just stick them together on ebay (buy-it-now $100) unless you're really into these ugly coins
