Who remembers the old 'Dennis the Menace' B&W sitcom? Mr. Wilson was a coin collector... The first I had ever seen, so he is my prototype.

ratio411- ah, that's right. And he was in the 1990s movie remake with Walter Matthau and Christopher Lloyd. And Christoper Lloyd's character stole Mr Wilson's gold coins. hmm.. I really do wonder what types Mr. Wilson collected.
Mr Wilson certainly looked like a coin collector....so did Walter Matthau now that I think of it. haha

desertgem- hmm that is a good question. Maybe they are the model on which all coin collectors subconsciously base their own aesthetics.

Quote: Who remembers the old 'Dennis the Menace' B&W sitcom? Good Old Mr Wilson! I remember that episode, I vaguely remember that Mr Wilson was talking to either his wife and/or Dennis and was commenting on some of the coins. Does anyone know what coins were mentioned in this episode? I think Dennis somehow gave them to The March of Dimes. Doh! Mr MaGoo looks fairly typical here.

haha! this is a funny post. I guess you should never judge a book by its cover. I just started to have some interest in coins, I don't think I would look like I fit in with the Numismatics crowd. But what does a coin collector supposed to look like? I don't look like a coin collector or a poker player, martial artist and metal worker. I'm like a "sleeping dragon" because I know and have experience in things that you wouldn't think I know about. Its like a redneck with a Ph.D. I met this coin dealer the other day and he looked like the perceived stereotypical type coin collector... he seemed obsessive compulsive, strong with numbers, introverted and he had trouble keeping eye contact. To me, If I would pick out a stereotypical personality that would describe a coin collector, this guy was it! I consider myself pretty good at reading people from my poker experiences and these were the vibes I got from this guy. For me, I don't mind not looking like I belong in a stereotypical group of people, such as coin collector. A person usually show their true colours when they feel they have an advantage over you because they believe you are less experienced and knowledgeable.

hmm, yes, I do see how Mr. Magoo looks like a numismatist.
Also, I do wonder just how often Mr. Wilson's coin collection was brought up in the course of the show and in the couple of movies made in the past couple of decades.

Bigger question here is who doesn't look like a coin collector? We come in all shapes and sizes and from all sorts of different backgrounds. Nobody is ever "wrong" while someone is "right". All of us are enthusiasts and students. That's one of the joys I'm finding of the general coin collecting community. Sounds like we need a member's photo directory. -- Boris
