Perhaps it's the enlargement, but I find it personally unattractive.

I will take any key date woody cents off your hands. Just send them my way. I have a place for them.

Interesting responses - and we benefit from the sharing of thoughts and best learning when we do not agree on a particular topic/coin. Consider these occasional topics as learning opportunities to share the wisdom and views of experienced collectors - in this regard there is knowledge to share. I'm in the camp of this particular woodie example would not be my choice for this (or any) key date coin. To be specific - the obverse toning/woodie effect on this example is random and splotchy, which to my eye is a significant distraction. That said - any 1909-S IHC certified AU50 is indeed a treasured coin and I salute mikev50 on having it.

To me, the issue would be re-sale. This discussion itself suggests your market would be smaller than for a conventional-looking coin in this grade.

I'm with @jbuck here. The photo looks a bit washed out. Here's what I see when I enhance and sharpen the image: Does this change any opinions? I like it. This one would sell on a bourse floor.

Better, but still not right for me. Nickelsearcher put it well. There are many examples of a woody that I love, key date or not. This particular one just happens to be inconsistent and distracting.

If the price were right I would buy it. However, it is a much higher grade than the rest of my IHC set, so the price being right is unlikely.

A couple woody collectors might get in a bidding war over this one if it came up. Very interesting coin.

I like woody cents as well, but not the obverse on this one. I tend to like woodgrains that accentuate and not dominate, I think they should complement the coin, not take it over. The reverse does this well, it simply adds to the coin and makes it look more spiffy. However it dominates the obverse do a degree that is distracting and I'm personally not a huge fan of that.

Not my cup of tea. But who am I to say? I don't own any 1909-s yet.

i do like wood-grain and it is common on 1909-s and 1908-s but I personally dont think this is that nice of a wood grain toning. important adn rare coin nonetheless
