Looks genuine, but since it's only worth a bit over melt anyway, the best thing is probably for him to take it to a jeweler to test it for gold.

File the loop of and weigh it.
Need a really sharp focus picture of the edge milling.

So far, I think it appears to be genuine, and has taken wear as a jewelry piece.

The reeds look like Doric columns, with slight flareing at the top and bottom. Look at an 1870's minted Morgan for an example of what you should see. Yuh yours is Genuine no doubt, a Fob (there seems to be a real lack of true circulation marks) for the Centennial...
