I used to save those too. Then I asked others if they wanted them and no one did so to the bank they went.

I think part of the appeal that when finding one in circulation it is often in much higher grades than all of the '70s Washington quarter counterparts. In addition, there are so many more by comparison, perhaps since they were minted in 1975 and 1976. I would imagine many are saved from older folks and when they pass, they are attempted to be sold to a coin dealer, which would more than likely advise them to be spent and thus they end up back in circulation.

I don't make a special effort to pull bicentennial quarters out of my change to save, but I have accumulated some over the years. As others have already commented, I hold no illusions of them ever being worth more than 25 cents and have no hesitation when it comes to spending them. I do like drummer boy design!

It's been some time since I posted these, so here is my "designer signed" set of the silver versions of the US Bicentennial coinage.

My understanding is that the artists were brought together for a 25th anniversary reunion on 18 October 2001; former President Gerald Ford was also part of the reunion as the coins were issued during his presidency.

While they were together, the artists and President Ford signed a variety of specially-printed PCGS inserts. The coins shown here are from a numbered, limited set of uncirculated silver bicentennial commemoratives (500 sets were created).

This could be a good reason.

So the coins are not special in this instance...the event is? The coins out of the holder are therefore not unique?

Correct. The holders add value for those who want them.

They are the only one of the Bicentennial designs I like so for years I saved them religiously. I also saved all copper pennies, 2009 coins of any denomination, all SBA's and a few other coins of no value above face.

A year ago I started to cull my horde and pulled out only the best of the stash and Coinstared the rest.

I no longer save any of these unless they are remarkable for some reason. I am sure that years form now I will regret it but that can likely be said about anything. 40 years from now we may well be wishing to find clads or even any coins at all...
