A nice box of 20 and all worthy. I admire your effort to examine your collection to pick out these twenty. I don't think I have the time to reduce my collection to the 20 best/favorites etc.

Your first coin (gold Mercury) is on my list of to-acquire... but not for a while as I can't afford ANY gold right now! Still, isn't that a nice looking coin?

All of them look great! About the American ones in particular, they are each a clear example of many areas / styles of collecting. From a gold double eagle down to a simple cent coin (yet amazing in its style). I obviously noticed you like American and Portuguese coins. May I ask why those two countries in particular?

Sorry, I forgot to answers the posts actual question: I collect only one type of coin (I have other coins, but only as a small investment, not as a numismtic interest of mine), so I would probably choose the 20 best examples of said coin. So, in my case, the choice would be reduce to a simple matter of grading.

Julio,

I was born in Portugal and have lived in the US since I was 7. It's basically the coins of the country I was born and my adopted country.

I saw that you like the 50 cents from 1881 to 1883? There are collectors on here that collect early large cents, I know of 2 that own hundred if not more of the 1858 Canadian large cent, as the dies were hand made many varieties exist. I like the variety hence I have type sets of my coins (although I have little modern coins), I collect older coins and those that are mostly silver.

Boy, that's a tough one. I can't imagine having to pick "the" 20 coins. It would probably be heavily weighted with 19th century and early 20th century proof issues. Then a few keys and maybe a couple with beautiful toning, and I'd have to have a couple of my favorite classic commemoratives. Oops, I think I'm already out of room in the 20-coin box...

This is why your actual collection has many boxes of 20 :)

But I do like to think of which coins are special or different enough to belong. Also todays box of 20 may not be tomorrows box of 20.

Nice set of 20 Hfjacinto.
Love the Lincoln (my birth year).

So what would be your box of 20?

I think I would go for my higher value coins.
Not that I have any that are worth a fortune.
Something that might grow in value and would give
me a few dollars as I head into retirement.

Firstly the Aussie $2 coloured coins.
Some of these are going through the roof price wise, especially with C mint mark.

2012 (C) $2 Remembrance Poppy (The first coloured coin released in Australia).

2013 $2 Coronation (The first coloured coin released for circulation)

2014 (C) Remembrance

2015 (C) Remembrance

Next would be Australian pre-decimal.
1927 Florin in MS63.
The-'One-Box-Collection'-Also-Known-As-'The-Infamous-Box-Of-20'---Could-You-Do-It?

For my U.S. coins I would keep these 2.

1909 S Lincoln, not VDB, but still worth a few bucks.
The-'One-Box-Collection'-Also-Known-As-'The-Infamous-Box-Of-20'---Could-You-Do-It?

1931 S Lincoln graded VG8BN.
The-'One-Box-Collection'-Also-Known-As-'The-Infamous-Box-Of-20'---Could-You-Do-It?

Moving across the border in to Canada. A couple of nice uncirculated silver coins.

2006 Canada $1 Timber Wolf

2009 Canada $5 Thunderbird.

Moving across the pond to U.K.

Can't go past the 2009 Kew Gardens 50P.
The-'One-Box-Collection'-Also-Known-As-'The-Infamous-Box-Of-20'---Could-You-Do-It?

Another couple of U.K. coins that are heading in the right direction

2002 Commonwealth Games - Northern Ireland 2 pounds
The-'One-Box-Collection'-Also-Known-As-'The-Infamous-Box-Of-20'---Could-You-Do-It?

2019 Letter A from the 10p alphabet series.
The-'One-Box-Collection'-Also-Known-As-'The-Infamous-Box-Of-20'---Could-You-Do-It?

Moving across to Europe.

2016 Germany 5 Euros - Planet Earth, the first of the coloured ring coins.

1901 2 marks from Prussia.

1931 (J) German East Africa 5 Heller
The-'One-Box-Collection'-Also-Known-As-'The-Infamous-Box-Of-20'---Could-You-Do-It?

Moving further south.
These two coins are in a 1969 set from The Order of Malta.

9 Tari

10 Grani
The-'One-Box-Collection'-Also-Known-As-'The-Infamous-Box-Of-20'---Could-You-Do-It?

Now a couple from Russia.

1924 One Rouble

1974 One Rouble
The-'One-Box-Collection'-Also-Known-As-'The-Infamous-Box-Of-20'---Could-You-Do-It?

And finally a 1978 1000 Lire from The Vatican.
The-'One-Box-Collection'-Also-Known-As-'The-Infamous-Box-Of-20'---Could-You-Do-It?

Well that was not easy to pick just 20 coins.
Glad I don't have to really do it. (Not yet anyway).

@triggersmob and @ hfjacinto, Great collections

Perhaps in the summer I will also publish my 20, but unlike my fellow collectors, my 20 collection will not cost a lot of money, my collection is mostly budget coins.

Interesting exercise--somewhat along the lines of: 'if one could have any five cars, what would they be'. A fun, pie-in-the-sky dream.

Alas, I have my reality of stuffed Danscos, trays of 2x2s, gobs of tubes, and a small mountain of unopened rolls to keep me going.

An Austin Healey 3000 MkIII would be a start...

Also for me, it's a sort of intellectual exercise to select 20 favorites but could never be a practical way of limiting my collection.
I have 5 themes in my collection. Four of them are OFER (One From Every Reign) which alone would be in the neighborhood of 50 coins if I really kept it to just 1 from each reign. The last theme (saints) could easily grow to about 100 "types" if I let it keep growing, though there is an easy way to cap it at 12 to 14 (the "exclusive club" of apostles (12) or apostles + evangelsts (14)).

For someone who has an OFEY collection rather than a type collection, it's also not really possible to cap the collection at 20.

None of my favorite 20 coins would be in mint state since they all will have been struck by 1700.

Need to give it some thought.
