That is was I thought, but wasn't sure. I know with error coins there is an extra cost, but am not sure about other attributes such as toning.
I guess my next question would be if anyone knows if this looks natural or artificially toned?

My guess is the toning is real, the color saturation in the last two photograph has just been increased (using e.g. Photoshop).

To the best of my knowledge PCGS and NGC ONLY mention toning if they feel it's artificial, not natural.
And for that coin it would have been graded something like PR Genuine / Artificially Toned.
Based on that I believe that it's naturally toned.

Toning and heavy patination do not affect the grade, but beautiful rainbow toning can sometimes raises suspicions, because it is often difficult to tell if it is artificial or natural. Even the TPG's have left the question of artificial or natural open with the 'comment'. IMO, it would be impossible to artificially tone a coin after it has been slabbed, because the slab would always interfere with whatever toning process was used. Problem with heavy patination is that it can somewhat hide things like hairline scratches. That is one of the reasons why TPG's grade coins in hand under strong light, with a 10x loupe. In the slab those hairlines under heavy patination can be almost impossible to see, and so we just have to accept the TPG's opinion. Due to the problems of deciding if toning is artificial or natural, I personally do not asses such coins with any higher or lower value. Anybody who tries to put a beautiful, but artificial rainbow toning on a coin is just wasting his time, IMO. This is one of the reasons why I prefer blast white silver coins in MS+ grades. For me, that is also the case for the coin pictured, but it certainly would not preclude me from buying it. Edited by sel_69l

Toning is never specified on any TPG slab. The closest you get is with copper when they call it RB or BN. Sure is a beautiful coin! The toning looks completely market acceptable to me. GOOD LUCK! Lincoln Cent Lover!VERDI-CARE™ INVENTOR https://verdi.care/

Thanks everyone! I think I'm going to go ahead and get it. It's a beautiful coin! I'm a Nevada native so I'm continuously looking for Nevada coins that are just really cool looking. But I don't want to get anything that's fake!

if it was not natural it would have been noted. I'm with sel_691 I avoid toned coins if possible. you never know what they are going to look like decades later. they could be stellar or look like crap.

I was a little leery because The store has so many toned coins, but I did ask and they said it was a natural tone. I did end up buying it. It's beautiful! And yes killer coin I couldn't agree more! |

Follow-up question on this topic, though. If the toning is natural, would it increase over time? Do the TPG cases slow down or end natural toning? I have wondered if TPG's don't mention toning because it is something that they cannot guarantee will remain constant whereas a year, for instance, won't become another year in time? Artificial or natural beautiful rainbow toned silver coins
need to be kept in airtight conditions, to prevent deeper toning and thus the possibility of spoiling the appearance.
