Very nice! Certainly AU though impossible to tell what the Sheldon score is. May I ask what the asking price is? Trend for an AU-50 is $900 for what that's worth.

I can't see any wear on either side but it's not my field, It look's uncirculated to me.
The patina hides what is a light finger print quite well probable even more in hand.

Cheers, Bill

When you click on it to get some closer image, I see a little wear in the hair around the ear and the hair bun. AU-55

That rim looks pretty sharp. I suspect this coin is mint state.

Tough one if you can't see it in hand. My charelton doesn't distinguish between large and small 99. A pretty pricy coin in that condition, I would be looking at some kind of guarantee about return (maybe paypal?), as the price difference between AU and MS seems quite large. Or ask that it be ICCS gradded before you buy, that is inexpensive and relatively quick. If I am reading this right, this could be a $3000-$10,000 coin or a $300-$500 coin. ICCS should not be an unreasonable expense. If the seller is hesitant about anything like that, that would raise some red flags for me.

Too bad about fingerprints, I would definitely be asking about new pictures with less glare on coin, especially around where the first signs of wear are going to be pretty evident.

It may not have been circulated much but this one isn't good enough for an MS grade. The hair (bun especially) would need more detail.

Rims look good, surfaces have a few tiny marks, and nice details, but this one gets AU max in my opinion. ICCS would probably grade it EF45, since they seem to have this enormous mental hurdle, preventing them from grading NL coins past EF.

I think this is probably mint state as well. When you look at a Newfoundland 18XX $2 gold you see a lot more detail in the hair. It's not there in any of the 20 cent pieces though - the hair is much less detailed, particularly in the braid. I will grant that it's possible that there is a minute bit of wear, with the toning making it hard to distinguish, but I'm going to fall on the side of grading this MS, and reasonably high grade MS as well. For verification check out the PCGS Canadian coin populations under 1899 NFLD 20 cents...they have one graded MS66 and it looks the same for the obverse. PCGS is not great at mid-grade Canadian grading, but they are quite good at MS grading.

I'd also agree that the seller taking it to ICCS to get it into a flip would give you a lot more certainty and cost very little. Or if the seller is in the US then send it in to PCGS and wait 2-3 months. :)

I would want slightly better pix against a better ( white) background .
I suspect that this coin is mint state , based on the " Look" .
That said could be anywhere from AU 58 to MS 62 . The prints don't
really help !
Absolutely needs a trip to ICCS , they could do a week turnaround
for less than 50 bucks CAD .

There are some fine examples shown here... for comparison ... I'm guessing AU58 for the coin pictured above. Its a beauty that's for sure but hard to peg as MS.

Looks MS, but with that ' ebay tilt' going on, there could definitely be a multitude of strong hairlines on the coin and you'd never know it until the coin arrives at your front door.

Stay away!!

I still cant believe this sold for 2099!

The Charleton lists the highest grade 20 cent 1899 at $800 for AU55, which means none exist that are better struck. The Charleton states that none of this coin were minted with MS quality finishes.

I know we take the Charleton prices with a grain of salt but woah! Makes me wonder what the winners max bid was when they only overshot the next closest bid by a dollar. Then again, some people have money to burn.
