If there are dates (day and month) on the bags, that might help to determine if they are small or large dates.

No dates on bags other than the year. Looks like I'll have to open a bag.

Pics will take a few days as my digital camera is not working. I'll have to take them the old fashioned way and put them to disc.

Thanks for your help.

take it to the dentist office and see if they could x-ray it, you should be able to read a date then--most dentist offices use comp. x-rays so there is no cost.

I don't know about yours, but my insurance doesn't cover numismatic x-rays.

I'd really like to know if your x-ray shows a date.

What to look for in a 1960 small date:

easiest way I have found is notice the "9" is slightly even or lower than the "1".

the "0" is thicker

Plus there are a ton of errors in this year! I have found a bunch personally.

check out other post or coppercoins.com is a great reference...and a member

Well if you swallow a coin and it gets stuck your insurance would cover it

Most metal x-rays show metal as white or gray. If you make a few alterations to the machine you can get a bit more detail but not enough for dates

I did swallow a nickel as a kid and my dad picked me upside down to try and shake it out of me

Not sure if he was trying to save my life or just Really wanted the nickel back

If he is one of us, it was probably a little of both!

1. How can I tell if they are small or large date without opening them?

Consult a psychic.

the bags will not (or should not be mixed) whatever is in there is good for the whole bag .

Not quite true. The bag will typically be a mixture of the output of seveal different dies. So even if you did have a small date that would not guarantee that all the cents in the bag would be small dates.

But since he wants to find out without opening the bag he'd have to swallow the whole bag. Should be an interesting x-ray.

For me the easiest way to tell the small date is by the 6. If look at a few, it's VERY easy to spot the small date 6.
