@Dowhat what contradictory opinions are you seeing? Seems like a complete consensus on the coin you posted: not a DDO.

SamCoin, in response to your last reply. You are correct. All responses following the first one, were in agreement and provided educational information. The wind was taken out of my sails following my first response to this question. Pure and simple MD through out. Punctuated with what appears to be an embarrassed looking emoji. The following responses confirmed my suspicions and provided useful information and opinions directed towards my understanding. Thanks to you all. I just got bummed out after the first reply and felt as though I have learned nothing.

-makescents-, what am I supposed to E-mail you? I have no idea what is turned on or off. For the most part. All these gizmos today are to complicated for me. Hell, I just upgraded my phone and have no idea how to recover my G-mail account. Try morse Code.

In all seriousness, each question asked in this forum is awesome. Whether it's the identification of why not, to coops pics/education, or just plain links to other discussions or seen phes, each provides an educational lesson that is really educational. While, yes some more than others, they each are genuine questions and it's fun to read. Thanks for keeping these discussions going.

I use images to enhance the message to understand things easier. It is easy to get lost in words. Read any information on something new you bought, new services provided, paper work that we don't read, because, we get lost in the words. The ones that help us most are the illustrative ones, with words. Thus my use of both. Easier to understand when we can see what is discussed. Thus my use of images, rather than just using words. The combination together keeps us from drowning in the words. The illustrations are the breath of air, keeps us from drowning in the words.

Good example of Mechanical Doubling - shelf-like. But more importantly, see the center of the devices? They are narrowed. They lost thickness during the Mechanical Doubling. True doubling. As Coop always says, focus on the center of the devices and it will be easier to see true doubled dies. The outside edge of the devices might still show MD. It is the spread of the center you're seeking.

Examples of different types of Machine Doubling. Now compare a MD example with a real doubled die:
Seeing them side by side, helps to see the differences. Note how the DDO devices are taller because of the hub doubling on the doubled die. Sometimes the hub doubling makes the devices wider: But seeing them side by side is a better way to determine if it is normal or a doubled die or Machine Doubling. When the devices are enlarged, the closed devices, 'B' and 'R' get smaller on these areas.

I hear you Dowhat... been there...so difficult for beginners to see these subtleties. I have stopped posting anything that doesn't match an already discovered DD. If the markers don't match existing it doesn't fly. I am not equipped yet for good photography and that makes it even harder to show what I think I am seeing. Years from now maybe I will get the hang of it.

I hear you Cons, if it hasn't already been found, more than likely, it does not exist. That always makes me wonder about the person that found the next one that did not exist. Hell, when it comes right down to it , do I even exist? I enjoy being in the moment. Anything is possible. Searching up another keeper right now.

You were "seeking opinions" yet didn't like what I said in my reply. I told you the truth, your coin was Machine Doubling. I suggest you become familiar with the minting process, then read past pages here on CCF to find what DDO's look like as well as Machine Doubling (and the differences between the two). Once you master these, you'll find looking up doubled dies within the reference sites to be a breeze. All of this research takes practice, and like anything else, the more you do it, the better you'll get at it. I've been a member here on CCF for over a decade now, and I'm still learning and trying to help others along the way. Sorry for the bluntness of my reply, but I try to assist as many members as I can, and we have a lot of new collectors who need help as well. And FYI, this: is part of my signature, being one of the few females here in a mostly male dominated field. Think what you like about it, but I like it.
