I agree, net MS-63. Pretty decent strike for 1891-O, and a fairly tough date above mid-AU.

Does anyone that has a full set of something, find themselves upgrading after two years of puttutting something together? I mean I cant afford a 400K coin, but I did find find some things I could upgrade, by a point or two.

And another queston, would you upgrade a coin a full point if the one you have has a PL designation, and the one you upgrade looses the PL designation?

I might if the overall eye appeal was an improvement.

If the original PL was a nice example, I would not consider it an upgrade unless the replacement was a PL or DMPL.

this is actually a nice strike for this year which is typically soft and weak. overall the reverse looks MS65 with decent luster and little if any marks or scuffs (at least based on the photo provided). the obverse is wear the rub lies on this coin. the cheek chatter is quite high that includes a couple pretty good digs along with multiple field scuffs and abrasions. I think the reverse may help hold this one, but just barely, to MS63

I'm a bit of a contrarian. The technical grade means less to me than strike quality, preservation (surfaces), and eye appeal. Given the choice of an average strike somewhat flashy UNC or a well struck AU SPL/PL, I'd take the AU. That's just me. Others see the technical grade as more important.

Collecting is like beauty. It's in the eye of the beholder.

The real question is how would you feel about the upgrade a year or so down the road. It's your collection. Nobody else can tell you whether your first coin or the new coin is the better coin for your set. Would you regret the purchase down the road? Would you wish you could go back in time and undo the deal? Or would you be happier with the new coin and never look back?

Strong luster and a good strike. However, the cheek, neck, and left obverse field are pretty banged up. These marks are distracting and significantly hurt eye appeal. I'd estimate MS-62 based on these images.

Your correct on that observation. I couldnt fathom the thought of a heavily toned coin in any shape form or fashion.

There are some people that go out of they way to collect them.

Different strokes for different folks.

If it was a really good PL, Id leave it go and keep the grade loss.
