Nope ...... it was ungraded and when I made this post the bid was at $51 with about 15 min left in the auction. I was prepared to pay $70 with my finger on the button and in the last 30 sec it jumped to and closed at $152.50. At that price I wouldn't clean it or have it graded. That's full value and grading or cleaning would only put you in a deeper hole.

Give the coin a long soak at the acetone spa.

Taking steel wool to the coin?

Of course not, I'm no fool. Soaking in some of the solutions you mentioned, perhaps even boiling in soapy water and a very soft toothbrush might help.

Not sure if all of the black stuff in the devices are dirt or toning - but I wouldn't be surprised if this coin was already previously cleaned and re-toned or if acetone would remove it (i.e., dirt or other surface contaminant).

To me you're better off not owning this coin.

The toning looks deep, so it won't all come off with a quick dip. I like the toning, it looks natural. I'd leave it as is. Of course if there is harmful residue like PVC, that should be removed with acetone.

It is a key date and obviously in original circulated condition.
It is best off like it is. It isn't going to get any worse and will be worth the most left as is.

The coin appears to have some type of glue residue on the reverse that should come off with a acetone bath. Next, I would make it a pocket piece for two of three weeks and handling it a lot getting skin oil on the coin. When it is in the pocket, do not put anything else in the pocket. If you only handle the raised areas of the coin, the coin can get a circulated cameo look. I have turned a couple of ugly toners into coins with acceptable eye appeal with the pocket method.

Where do you find these coins? I picked up an AU1921 for $175 a few years ago. I would have skipped and passed this one unless it was melt. If this was it, I would pass. I think you need to start looking other places to get coins.

If you want Peace dollars here

They even have them already slabbed and you already know the price.

Stop buying on ebay, most of the stuff your picking up is in my opinion way overpriced and honestly not really visually appealing.

If everbody hates the look of this coin, maybe I'll keep my eyes peeled for similar "ugly" coins at a discount!

Coins collecting, is almost like a religion. There are many commandments. 1. DO NOT CLEAN COIN COINS. 2. Acetone bath never hurt anything. 3. Dipp only when you know how to dip, and your a betting man.

Thats all I goit LOL

Toning, like grading, is somewhat subjective and can enhance or detract from one's opinion of the desirability of a coin. Take for example some of the plate coins in PCGS Coinfacts; I observe 9 (EF40 to MS65+) that have somewhat heavy toning, and/or deposits in the protected areas adjacent to the relief; in particular the EF-40 Cert #83155695 that is similar to the wear state and toning/deposits (strike boldness discounted) of your subject coin. PCGS thought enough of these to include them as examples, so heavy toning and/or deposits are not generally going to detract too much from the final grade.

As for "cleaning", there are times that you may desire to "clean" a coin that has surface deposits (e.g. PVC or Scotch Tape residue, dust and surface dirt, deposits in the form of finger oils and other contaminants present on the hands that have attracted and captured airborne and surface particles, and which has deposited itself against the relief in the protected areas over a long period of time [the black areas in your subject coin]), or to dip a coin that has darker shades of toning. I will not go into "cleaning" methods here, other than to say that I am very experienced in using all of them including dipping and ultrasonic, and in my opinion your subject coin will not be enhanced by any of them. Typically, removing toning on a worn coin will show ALL of the surface defects (e.g. hairlines and scratches), and using a solvent that might dissolve organic soils will only leave a markedly different looking reflective area where the soils were versus the balance of the coin where it does not remove anything. From my own submission experience with the TPG's, and from observing multitudes of coins that have received "Harshly Cleaned" or "Improper Cleaning" Details Grades, I strongly suggest that you do not attempt to "clean" your coin. From your photos, your coin could grade between VF30 to EF45, and also from my experience, if you do submit coin to CAC you might get it to sticker if it certifies at a VF30 or VF35 level.
