These are the coins I was curious about? I put obverse and reverse to show they were not zincolns. Both coins are at a slight angle so the top of the memorial building looks weaker on the left side. All I can tell you is both buildings are full at the top. The last photo of the 1976 reverse is actually more detailed than the first photo. It's the angle of the top. That's how the steps look.

Wait for Badthad to comment on the steps issue . The tiny white specks could be just dust on the coins when your photographing them . Before you shoot take a very soft small paint brush and lightly brush any particles that may be on the coins .

I have several memorials that have one or two steps on the reverse and the rest is smooth. First thought is weak strike, so I look at the lettering of united states of America and all letters are sharp and bold. Second I look at memorial building and every detail above the column is complete meaning the swirls above are all complete. Is this still a weak strike?

There is no single answer for this. The steps vary for many reasons, mostly incomplete die filling and over-used hubs/dies. There have also been some changes/modifications of the master reverse hub over the decades.

For example, in 1980 they removed the fine detail from the steps, they became little more than a few bumps. 1985 marked the return of a fresh 19 step design. However, the master die was poorly made and working dies wore quickly and problems with the copper plating covered step detail on most coins.

The point is, to answer your question, you'll have to post a specific year and question.

The 19 step design started in 1959. The hubs and dies were fresh and the steps were one of the finest details on the coins. The mints were producing billions of Lincolns yearly from 1959 up so the hubs and dies wore rapidly. You can see the progression of the reverse hub degradation from year to year up to 1980 when the mint apparently gave up on the reverse and went to the "8 bumps" design. Part of this was in preparation for the copper plated zinc coins coming in 1982. The course step design reduced the chances of splitting the plating.

The the 1979 & 1976 - you will never find these with full steps. The master reverse hub was cooked through the mid-late 70's and it produced horrible working hubs and dies with weak, muddled step detail.

I would trade my SVDB for a full, 19-step 1976 MS red coin!

My 1979 is one of the few years that has not made it into an Airtite for me. The reverse has some light toning and ghosting on the reverse. I'm still looking for a better one! This is a TOUGH year to find quality examples.
