The coins have the toning look of Chinese fakes. The hair details are not sharp. The date on the 1879 has a bubble look. I would like to see photos of the reverse. Put me in the counterfeit camp.

Here are two others at an affiliated shop... This particular shop has had a lot of fake coins. I go in assuming most of what they have is fake... I posted a few other threads with fakes. Once these didn't pass the ping app and I wasn't getting exactly 38.1 I didn't think much about them... But they are the best fakes I've seen although I haven't seen many fakes...

A lot of fakes are made in China. It's wise to have a micrometer, coin scale, ping tester, magnet etc. But I think it's even more important who you buy from. You say these Morgans are from shops, are they pawn shops? I only buy from well established coin stores in my city and online. My LCS has an analyzer that verifies what they sell. He has a bowl full of fake coins people brought in to sell and they had been duped. He keeps them to show people. I don't buy coins on Facebook, AliExpress, Craigslist, etc. I do buy on ebay from reputable coin sellers I trust.

That's the problem ....I live in Rome and Morgans sell at a stupid high premium here (ie €60). Rome, unknown to many, has a very rich used market culture... I buy and sell all the time and started coin collecting after finding some authentic coins at reasonable prices... We gotta play the hand we're delt ....

Another idea to use is see if any of these match up with known vams from vamworld.com, die cracks also help, probably other methods as others have said.

Ok! I think I confirmed it today. My scale is not great, but I use it for approximates. Weights were all around 26.xx. NONE passed the ping on piNGCoin app... The music was lower and they just didn't ping. Diameter is about 36... But ...they ALL had evidence of casting; bubbled metal and some tooling marks. I am new to this, but these are good fakes to the eye and touch... Here are a load more pictures.

Hard to judge these Morgans from your photographs, but three things stand out to me. First, the dates have that "baloonish" look of most counterfeits/copies I've seen. Second, the toning doesn't look natural. Third, I find it hard to believe that none of them have much in the way of contact marks.

I don't know much about coin buying in Italy, except I've bought a few ancient coins from Italian auction houses. If you can watch Youtube there are numerous videos about fake coins. Just do a search on Youtube and you'll see videos showing fake Morgans, fake Peace, fake silver eagles, etc. If the coins you show were mine I'd return them for a refund if I could. I'd only buy from sellers who allow returns or sellers who test the coins for you before you buy. I sometimes see coins here in America at garage sales and estate sales. Some coins are real, some fake. My wife is Italian, her grandparents came to America in the 1920s from Sicily. She says if I ever cheat on her she will contact the mafia .

I saw two more of these today ... One weighed in at 26.73... one at 27.8x. what metals are these Alibaba sellers using that's getting the weights so close?

Of course neither today pinged, the details were off, there was evidence of casting but the weights have all been ok..to the untrained collector here in Rome ... These would pass and will likely be bought.... Although the shop today pulled them when I showed the piNGCoin app...

They have that moulded look to them. The lettering and details aren't sharp, and as one poster said they look balloonish.

One dealer around where I live kept several in his case. When you picked one up it felt light, as if it were made of aluminum. It wasn't, but if you handle real dollars much you can feel the relative lightness of a fake.

So, I have handled fake Morgans made of low weight metals... They weigh no where near 26.73... but all of these ... Except one or two at 1-2 grams overweight . . . Were pretty close. If a buyer didn't ping or didn't know better and only weighed, they'd weight about fine.

Alibaba sells these at about weight. Any ideas what they are making them of at so close to weight?

Most Chinese made dollar counterfeits are made from brass, plated with a thin layer of silver. Brass has a similar density to silver, and is cheap.
