But...... Most of your old timers (not age, long time collecting) say NO NO NO. ...

That is a reflex to stop newer collectors from automatically destroying the desirability of a coin. (Sort of like taking an eraser to the Mona Lisa to remove a smudge. LOL)

The obv of this coin was already a "Details" mess from the residue on it. It is still a "Details" coin but is much more appealing IMHO.

Thanks for adding to the forum with your question.

I would spot treat that area under the bust and rim.

Thanks John1, Any suggestions other than the Verdi-care already applied?

Thanks T-Bop, I've never done that but will give it a try. I'm guessing it may really penetrate the worst areas.

ps. I was kind of hoping someone would be curious about the auction lot of unsearched "rolls" from the safety deposit boxes. This group actually had some decent varieties in it, this semi-key, and 5 or 6 1922D. Still hoping for a holy grail before I finish but I'm definitely not holding my breath.

Nope, either just spot treat that area with VC or soak the entire coin.

WOW! Nice score, looks to be at least VF. This is exactly the type of application VC was designed for. GREAT CONSERVATION!

PS - I would stop the conservation there. A tiny bit of original, left over grime is fine IMO.

I would be quite happy with that result! Big improvement on the overall appearance of the coin.

As an admittedly old school crusty old fart, my knee jerk reaction to cleaning a coin is always NO. But in this case it is a clear improvement. Every rule has the exception.

There is a very fine line between cleaning and conserving a coin.

Thanks Badthad. It does look nice in those side by sides. I have that "collage" ability on my phone but the images were in my 'Puter.
