My CU will sell one roll per customer per day. Not one roll of each - one roll period. I asked for quarters last trip.

I have a question for you. Have you been able to get any rolls of canadian pennies ever since they've stopped minting them?

I think he was only writing about getting US coins from the US banks; not Canadian. Just like when I used to drive south to Canada to visit Canadian banks for rolls of Canadian coinage. (Gosh, I really miss not being able to cross the borders anymore.)

Cdncoins, I have been unable to get coins from my bank for over a year now. I see online about how some posters are still able to get cases upon cases every week. This confuses me and either makes me feel sad that I don't have that opportunity or angry and jealous of those people who can.

Also, yes, I had to need an account to be able to get more than a roll or two from the bank. Technically I was supposed to have a Business Account to get boxes of coins, but the head-lady at my bank knows I'm retired and disabled and knows that coin-searching is one of the few things I can do nowadays, so she helped me out when coins used to be available.

@atticguy - Not sure how many banks you have but in the city here pop. 165k, there are a lot of banks. Just call around to a few to find out which ones you feel could cater to your hobby. You will want to have boxes ordered fee-free if you'd like. I believe I had accounts with six banks back when I was roll hunting.

After searching online I found a large U.S. bank that offers no fee checking accounts. You only need to deposit $10 to start then no minimum deposit. I may try to open an account with them next time I'm in NY. I can't open an account online as I'm not a U.S. citizen, but I believe I should be able to in person.

As for Canadian pennies, officially the Canadian banks have not given any out since 2012, but there are some members on this forum who have connections and are able to get them before they are sent off to be melted down.

I've been keeping whatever canadian pennies I've seen in circulation for a couple of years now. I'm thinking they'll all be rare one day soon enough.

So do you have any way of finding canadian pennies in the wild? Can you still get them in change?

Joshu-a there are no pennies in change anymore. If you pay with cash it's rounded up or down to the nickel.

Every year between 1961 to 2012 there were between 140 million to 1.2 billion Canadian pennies minted. There's still a lot of them out there so I don't see circulated examples from these years selling for a premium any time in our lifetime. Although if copper prices keep going up, maybe it will become economical to melt them down.

My local banks are pretty good with cashing in and giving me rolls they have laying around. I'm in southern new york. I have a secret weapon. I usually bring my 3 year old daughter. Most tellers just can't say no.

I asked the head teller at my local branch about ordering boxes. She is very willing to do that. Timing is dependent on their armored car schedule. She said we can order less than boxes too. They won't take rolls back (yet) as there is a free coin sorting machine customers can use.

At a different branch location near work the teller mentioned they rarely get requests for rolls.

Never a problem buying halves or any other coins in Washington State.

We occasionally can buy pennies from banks in Canada still if you ask, but normally they accumulate them in $25 bags and send for destruction. I've saved a few hundred dollars worth of copper, still dumping the steel cents inna coin counter as I sort out small stashes of pennies I come across.

I've found a lot of the "shortage" nowadays has to do with the manager.

There are 6-7 branches of Wells Fargo locally where I have an account. I've dealt with three. In one I was told by the manager that because of the coin shortage only two rolls per day. I had $300 worth of rolled, mixed denomination coins to bring/cash in and only wanted to see if they would sell me any customer-wrapped rolls. Nope! Two rolls she said.
I was really confused because there was a coin shortage according to her. She would buy my coins but still not trade.

Baffled, I bought two rolls, walked out, and took the coins to a sister branch where they sold me about $10 worth of customer-wrapped rolls of cents. The helpful assistant there said she worked with the other manager before and said that was just the way she was. It was that manager and not the bank putting limits on roll purchases.

I'm can only guess that the first manager's position was to minimize downtime for her employees chasing down rolls (or she wants them all for herself. )

As I noted several months ago when this particular topic appeared, roll availability remains mostly healthy in my region. Cordial, respectful relationships with managers and tellers continue to mitigate issues.
