Quote: Give it up, people. Maintaining a circulating cent is needless waste. Yup and as I said, I hope they stop circulating cents and just move on to NIFC cents made of copper or bronze for collectors to maintain their collections and to memorialize the Lincoln Cent so to not be forgotten.

Quote: Hopefully they kill the stupid shield design before that happens I actually like the shield. How about a compromise... higher relief on both sides of the cent! Maybe some depth would give the shield more spice.

Nice thing about NIFC cents is they could give them away free post paid up to twenty to a customer and still save millions and millions of dollars.
and just add a little handful to every order and still be millions ahead.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.

BadThad you are right. That shield design has got to go. I am afraid to look it up why they used the shield for the coin. If they fix the design and make it last in circulation, ok by me. I just thought they were getting rid of the money losing penny.

Quote: Actually, they don't have to make a profit to exist. They use our taxpayer money to make money. This is incorrect. The US Mint does not receive any appropriations (i.e., taxpayer money). It is a self-funded agency that derives the funds it needs for operating expenses (including the production of one cent coins) and any profits it generates from seigniorage on circulating coins, sales of numismatic coins/products and sales of bullion coins. Quote: I am afraid to look it up why they used the shield for the coin. The deciding committee of fools thought the other designs portraited America as "aggressive" so picked the shield since it's seen as "defensive". It had nothing to do with aesthetics or anything else as I recall. The eagle designs were beautiful and they killed it for being to "aggressive". I wish they went with one of the Capitol designs.

Once again we are hit with another unfounded rumor based on a spurious source. The one thing true is that inflation is, at its' root, caused by our greed. But then greed is the source of a lot of the problems of the world along with ignorance as in the start of this tread and good old fashioned stupidity and laziness, or unwillingness to fact check. Now, back to the popcorn...

I think another reason they used it is because it is very reminiscent of the shield design that was used on some common civil war tokens, another link to Lincoln and the time of his Presidency.

Frankly speaking, greed is a good thing. That's what capitalism is based on. Imagine not being able to get a loaf of bread because the "greedy baker" wouldn't bake it for free. Or, you couldn't get meat or vegetables because the "greedy farmer" wouldn't give it away at cost. Or, you couldn't get your car fixed because the "greedy mechanic" wouldn't fix it for free, and so on and so on and so on........... That being said, I understand that greed like anything else can be abused.
