Check the reverses on any 1870, 71, & 72 to see if they are the Shallow N variety. The 1871 is especially rare and worth considerably more than the Bold N counterpart. Also check any 1867 & 1894 for the doubled date.

I think I would make an offer on the lot myself! Anxiously awaiting results!

Well if you find a non-key one in MS-60 that you might consider selling, let me know, I am looking for one in my typeset.

I am back! With good/bad news. The bad news is.. they weren't Indian Head cents, he was mistaken. The good news is they were all wheat cents! Ok, here's the list... I would say average grade is fine to VF.. nothing MS that I could see THE LIST Key Dates: 1909-S (2) 1914-D (1) 1924-D (3) 1931-S (1) Badly Worn - Grades Fair at best 1933-D (2) There is at least 1 of every coin below. Some of the more common dates have 4-6 of each. 1909 1910 1911 1911-D 1912 1912-D 1912-S 1913 1913-D 1913-S 1914 1915 1915-D 1915-S 1916 1916-D 1916-S 1917 1917-D 1918 1918-D 1918-S 1919 1919-D 1920 1920-D 1921 1921-S 1923 1923-S 1924 1925 1925-D 1925-S 1926 1926-D 1927 1927-D 1927-S 1928 1928-D 1928-S 1929 1929-D 1929-S 1930 1930-D 1930-S 1931 1931-D 1932 1932-D 1933 1933-D 1934 1934-D Then there's a strange gap in the dates until they pick up here (some of these had 8-9 of each) 1950 1950-D 1950-S 1951 1951-D 1951-S 1952 1952-D 1952-S 1953 1953-D 1953-S 1954 1954-D 1954-S 1955 1955-D 1955-S 1956 1956-D 1957 1957-D 1958 1958-D I have no idea why there wasn't single coin in the 16 year gap. Any guesses? Now I need to make an offer on the lot as he has no urge to keep the coins. What would be a fair offer for every cent he's got?

Idea! in your original post you said they have been in the mason jar for 70 years. maybe more? like 74 maybe? maybe original depositor died, or maybe just fell on hard times and couldn't deposit anymore into the jar... Until 16 years later...or somebody else started saving them too. Ask him what he wants for them! let him tell you! Be fair and tell him he's got a lot of commons, but does have a few better coins.

Even if they are all G-4 it looks like it may get a little spendy for you. If you can get a grey sheet and maybe split the difference between the bid and ask prices, or something along those lines for the key and semi keys, and 3 cents apiece for the rest.

There's a lot of ways you could go about it. I suggest you offer as much as you honestly can but explain that if he took the time to sell them individually he might be able to make a bit more. If they were my cents I had laying around and someone offered me in the $200 range I'd probably be pretty happy and surprised.

The keys alone are worth $400-500 at retail. Then you have probably another $100 in the more common dates. One hard part is that you are going to have a lot of commons left with no easy way to sell them profitably. I'd shoot for paying half retail - maybe $200-300? Nice find - what a fun time - looking through a bunch of pennies and seeing that 1909-S pop up! Then finding another! And a 14-D. Wow. Wish it were me - how did you come upon this opportunity? Ken

I would think $200 - 300 would be fair. You could also ask him to name a price, and if he comes in low, offer your higher price to show that you are willing to be fair.

Quote: how did you come upon this opportunity? I was helping my buddy move from DC to Connecticut last weekend and on the drive down his father saw that I was reading a coin book and told me about the cents. Well I called and said I'd like to offer him 325 for the whole collection and we was thrilled... I'm going to take a ride up to his house this weekend and I'll pick them up then. He also has 2 of every S proof set from 1968-2004 that he said he doesn't want anymore. The fun continues

Sometimes it all goes your way! Maybe some of the extras will end up on the Sell/Trade board... Ken

I guess we should all walk around with coin books in our hands, etc. I for one, will keep coin books in my office so others will see/know I'm a collector and maybe I will get as lucky as photoeric21.
Congrats on the great find and have fun.
