Quote: When I compare your coin to pictures on PCGS photo grade is see more wear on the high points around the ear, bow tie and lapel then an AU 58. I can also see wear over the middle columns and stairs. I'm looking between Au 50 & 55. Ah, I see. yes the ear is very noticeable. I find it very hard to grade, still. This is helpful. Thank you!

It's much easier for me when I'm building my sets to clump these low value coins into categories. G,vg,f,xf,Au,bu, and choice bu. Get comfortable with doing that and you have a great start at grading. No need to get caught up in the difference between au50 and au58 until significant dollar value is involved. This is how I started to learn grading and now 10 plus years later as I attempt to upgrade my circulated sets I am finding it much easier to notice more nuances within the categories but ultimately even now I still don't need to get zero'ed in on the exact number. A nice Au coin is just that and worth the price on it, just as a nice vf would be for a more expensive coin.

I can sort of discern between those when I look up guides for each coin. It's still not easy because I see how many mistakes I am making in general, but this is a smart way to do it. And you're right, these are not valuable coins. No point agonizing lol. But I am finally trying to get them all in 2x2's and I want to get an idea before they get stapled in lol. But thank you so much, I will def do it your way!
