Um, we'd kind of need some zoomed-out pics, to see the whole coin.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis

Blowing up something 30-50 times with a microscope, blasting it with light and then taking a picture puts everything out of whack, especially since someone painted it black. Of course, steel is going to appear silvery and shiny against the black and also certainly, some exposed steel will show the beginning oxidation with rust. I still have no idea why this is so interesting or questionable.

it still looks like metal plating to me. so it would have to be brass or gold. even bronze can look yellow by heat.

so the second strike is on top the first with shift plus a crack from the top strike excellent. that is plating under varnish.

This thread is a little confusing. Rocky, are you saying the coin was plated (which would be post mint) or are you saying it's an error coin? I'd like to see full pictures of the coin so I can have a better understanding of what your explaining.

I just can't get a good feel for the colour with these up close shots, that's all I was saying. With different lighting and 30× zoom anything can look like anything. I'm not aware of any way a coin could be painted or plated post mint. Full coin photos front and back and weight would help me see what your seeing. The close ups don't help for something like this.

Are all your questions/photos of war-time US cents, which are steel-coated zinc? Zinc turns more whitish from the deep grey as it ages. The mint did nothing that you talk about and show for the 2 coins. Someone is just playing around.

Why is this in the Canadian section?
More importantly, what's all the hype about a painted cent, or a cent with environmental damage?

This is 43 that has been reprocessed. There are millions and million out there. Nothing unusual worth about 3 cents.

But the OP states it's painted black. My question is WHY?
