I use Coin Manage and Love it I used Coin Keeper for a couple years but wasn't happy with data input especially new coins not in the data base. Coin Manage is Basically An Access program so if you know your way around access you can modify any thing I do enjoy the ease of importing data and pictures New coins can be added with ease Coin manage includes US and Foreign plus Commeratives

Count me as another vote for the spreadsheet method. Quote: Excel...the price is right! OpenOffice.org, the price (free) is even better!

For those of you that are using Excel...what fields do you set up? Anyone mind attaching a template of their spreadsheet? Also, here's a link to another thread that talks about software that other have used. https://goccf.com/t/14678

Here's mine, keep in mind it's set up for my muliples, so there's some extra rows. This is my life blood of my collection. It allows me to keep track of everything with my Lincolns. I have multiple sheet tabs that I use for other coins in my collection. http://www.badthad.com/coin/lincoln.xls

I have one that has a first page that (a) gets the tab names (countries of course ), (b) places those names into a row, gets the number of coins listed on that page, then totals them. For the other pages, I'm going to set them up to get average price based on past certain criterion and put that into a FMV column (based on country name, year, denomination, and grade columns, in a background internet search hopefully resulting in some parse-able data). That part isn't finished yet as I haven't had time. When I get it done I'll post it. Yes, Excel spreadsheets can either include the picture or a link to the file, whether it's local to your computer or on the internet. Thanks for posting your spreadsheet, BadThad. The "comments on year" would come in especially handy

Quote: is there any way to post an image/photo in an excell cell? Yes you can inset photo's in a cell but by the time you do and entire collection the spreadsheet takes for ever to load because of all the pics. I have my spreadsheet set up to automatically update prices everytime it is opened. I pull the prices from the numismedia website. But it could be set up to get prices from any price guide that is online. I put together a sample spreadsheet here that will update your price list http://www.mediafire.com/?sharekey=...75f6e8ebb871

If you want pictures, the solution is to put a LINK in the cell. I've played around with it, but it would be a LOT of work for a Lincoln collector. I've debated taking the project on many times. If I was smart, I would have started doing that as I built the sheet.

Quote: Thanks for posting your spreadsheet, BadThad. The "comments on year" would come in especially handy You're welcome! The comments on year are a work in progress. It's kind of like writting a book. When I observe or read a fact, I update my comments. Sorry if you find spelling/grammer errors, I tend to just slap stuff in there. Here's another handy one I made. It lists all the Memorial cents by mintage. Comes in handy as I identify the "key dates" for the series. Another topic for discussion. http://www.badthad.com/coin/memorial_mintage.xls

I've used excel for years and it is still my main piece of software for recording my collection. It's so much more versatile than proprietary software. You can do so much with it using formulas and so on.
I have, however, just started playing around with MS access. This is better for having a one page per coin type of record including photos of obverse and reverse etc. In fact it's excellent.
And you can import your data from excel "fairly" easily. Takes a little learning though!

For pics you can have a OBV column and REV column write the abbreviation highlight then insert hyperlink. Put all your photos in one folder for convenience. You then can click on the link and it will pull up the pic if you need it tedious process, but might be worth it for higher priced coins or something.

I am using Exact Change version 3.8.4.80; I really think it is a worthwhile program. Very easy to use, very intuitive controls etc. It's reports feature is great and customizable. I am still in the process of adding my coins and this will take a considerable amount of time but I think it is great overall. I have used Coin Manage and other program in the past. Coin Manage is a nice program but I would only caution you about changing the coins they have already in their database. I deleted several coins and moved coins from one category to another. Then I did there update and it re-added the coins that I deleted and or moved. So all the time I spent getting the database the way that I wanted it was lost. I have also tried Coin Collector's Assistant Plus (Carlisle Development Corp) but I found that it had a very large learning curve. Exact Change comes on a DVD, primarily because the program contains over 21,000 images. It is suited for both U.S. and World coin collections. Exact Change has the capability of its users adding categories and customs reports (along with many pre-defined ones). It has all the bells and whistles of the major programs plus more. To top it all off Exact Change has customer service that I believe is second to none. They answer your questions promptly and usually the next day. They have frequent updates which by the way are FREE forever! They are also very receptive to their customers suggestions for improving the software. At $79.95 including free updates I don't believe there is a more reasonably price Coin Collecting Software program out there. Recently Wildman Software (Exact Change) signed an agreement with Krause Publications authorizing Wild Man Software to include KM numbers in the Exact Change database. Exact Change is the only software package for coin collectors that is currently authorized to include these catalog numbers. Wildman Software has also recently released a feature called ebooks. This feature allows users who have the Krause Publications Standard Catalog of World Coins on DVD. They can view the catalog right in Exact Change. When you click on a coin type, Exact Change takes you right to the correct page in the correct catalog. It doesn't go just to the country, it goes right to the page on which that particular coin type is listed! The next version of the software will also allow you to track your paper money collection. This is a great feature for those of us that collect both coins and paper money. Give Exact Change a look, I don't believe you will be disappointed but you will have a little less money in your wallet. Also they now have a trial version that you can download to try for free.
