@Panda
0.75 rose-cut gemstone adds a captivating colour to this design while representing Canada's Francophone spirit.

I see the S.E. Proof Set took a $20 price jump from last year, but, yes, I'll still buy it. I guess the increase isn't really a surprise.

I definitely prefer "the look" of the Alexander Graham Bell portrait on the silver dollar in the new Special Edition Proof Set vs. the "word art" version from earlier in the year. I find it much more attractive. I find all of the words in the earlier coin to be visually distracting.

@commems You are spot on, I couldn't agree more. I have the proof silver dollar, but have been holding off on the silver proof set (it looks even worse to me highlighted with the gold plating). I like many of the coins the RCM produces, I just wish they were a little less 'artsy' sometimes.

Ordered one of the SE Silver Dollar Proof Sets in spite of the $20 increase in price from last year.

As of the time of posting this, the RCM website is showing a mintage of 5500 for the Sea Otter. I imagine something to do with the first 1000 coins being sold as the Low COA. Either a mistake or kind of misleading...

Quote: Either a mistake or kind of misleading... Not a mistake, but potentially misleading. The Mint's maximum available mintage figures are based on the assigned Product Number. The "Low" certificate option is Product Number 203513, the balance are available under Product Number 203516. Two numbers, two mintage specifications. Without prior knowledge of the "Low" certificate quantity of 1,000, it's easy to see how a collector could think that 5,500 was the total/overall available mintage vs. the 6,500 actual total. The Mint has been more transparent for some issues in the past, but has also had the same issue for others. I agree that it would be nice if the Mint was clearer with its presented maximum mintage numbers.

I bought the Bell silver proof dollar and the silver proof set with the gilded proof dollar earlier. It seems the RCM realized the word-art thing may not be for everyone so they changed it. So I did buy the SE proof set too, although I'm not crazy about getting the other non-silver coins. The SE version does look better to me. How many variations of Mr. Bell are they planning this year? Reverse proof, some sort of privy mark, one showing him getting his first phone bill ... &

Quote: It seems the RCM realized the word-art thing may not be for everyone so they changed it. It's certainly a possibility, but it seems unlikely. The Mint has been issuing Special Edition (SE) Proof Sets that feature a silver dollar (SD) that presents a variation of the design on the regular/annual SD since 2015. The SD in these SE sets has run the gamut from a same-theme/different (sometimes colourized) design (2015, 2016*, 2018*, 2019*, 2020*), to same-design/different finish (2021). The 2017 SE Set includes a SD that was a colorized version of the "Home and Native Land" SD vs. the standard/annual "Confederation" SD. (Note: * denotes colourized design in addition to being a different design.) Here's a list of them: 2015: 50th Anniversary of the Canadian Flag 2016: 150th Anniversary of the Transatlantic Cable 2017: 150th Anniversary Of Canadian Confederation 2018: 240th Anniversary Of Captain Cook at Nootka Sound 2019: 75th Anniversary of D-Day 2020: 75th Anniversary of V-E Day 2021: 100th Anniversary of the BluenoseSo, I would be surprised to learn that the Mint created the SD with a traditional portrait version of Bell in response to negative feedback on the word art version. IMO, the Mint had its 2022 releases planned well before the January release of the word art design. I hope you enjoy the SD Set when it arrives!
