The raised "Liberty" is a better-known feature, I think.

Come on guys, all coins have a third side!!

I was just about to head for bed, but decided to crack the safe just to photograph the edge. Here is an Twenty Cent Piece pictured next to a Seated quarter.

Does that make it the largest circulating silver U.S. coin without a reeded or lettered/designed edge? The only other one I can think of off the top of my head is the Three Cent Silver.

Thanks @jacrispies. That's one of the disadvantages of slabs - it's tough to see the edge!

I own one 20 cent coin. But I have never noticed such features, especially I was struck by the shield and the words "liberty".

On the subject of differentiating coins, they even experimented with using various hole shapes. I recall something about an emphasis on blind people (the reeded versus plain edge would have helped with that), but I can't recall where I read it.

@jfransch, thanks for your kind words. Once I completed my Dansco 7070, I like putting "small" sets together, so here's a hotlink to my four coin 20 Cent set:

@apcol258 , some Gobrecht dollars had plain edges, and many of them circulated.

Nice coins and group.

Parts of US coins that fascinate me are these forgotten denominations, of course on my budget and understanding, all I have is an 1865 3 cent nickel.

Realised they were right about 6 denominations to 5 cents in 1870s, Indian head Pennies, 2 cent copper and nickel and silver 3 cents and 5 cents.

Besides the 20 cents, seems silly as the coin was still very close to quarter size (The English shilling was pretty much in the middle worth around 23 cents), the true rarity is the $4 Stella. Do any of you have one of those?

My one and only Stella is my cousin from New Jersey, lol.

I think the 6 1870s coins the article is referencing are:
1c IHC 19mm 1859-1909
2c 23mm 1864-1873
3c Silver 14.3mm 1851-1873
3c Nickel 17.9mm 1865-1889
5c Shield nickel 20.5mm 1866-1883
Seated half dime 15.9mm 1837-1873

If those small denomination coins weren't enough, it seems like other small denominations still circulating during the 1870s would be:
1/2c Braided Hair 23mm 1840-1857
1c Braided Hair 27.5mm 1840-1857
1c Flying Eagle 19mm 1856-1858

Can you imagine 9 different coins bouncing around all worth 5 cents or less? I don't know why they thought a 20 cent coin would help.

And if that wasn't enough low coin denominations circulating, fractiional currency was also circulating. Perhaps even some encased postage stamps may have still been in circulation.
