Quote: Of course when he said that we were still British subjects and there were no cents. Well, of course Franklin passed away before the Coinage Act of 1792--but it may also explain the penny's persistent usage in common speech? Obviously, we're not going to change that, so I'll choose to use "cent" only in cases where it actually matters.

Wow! all this time I've been arguing the case for the penny based on the nickel. Who would have thought that was wrong too!

Quote: The thing is that using proper terms is important. If you get sloppy on this and are allowed to get away with it, then how can we object to the use of improper terms in other areas? Quote: The use of proper terms is the mark of a professional or a serious student. The use of improper terms or slang is the mark of the amateur, layman, or ill-informed. Again, But I'll try to make my point again. For those of you who aren't amateur, layman or ill-informed: POLITELY inform those of us who need to be informed. Making smart-aleck comments about pennies or cents tears away the little shred of confidence a beginner has. By all means, please help us newbies understand the correct terminology. But, in my very short time on this forum I have seen newbies get worthless, smart-aleck replies to legitimate questions. What did they do to deserve this? They used the P-word! The vast majority of us amateurs, laymen, and ill-informed, are here because we don't want to be any of the above. We want to learn enough to earn your respect. Just, please, don't treat us like we don't belong here. Is this forum only for "a professional or a serious student"? Disclaimer: I used Conder101's comments only to illustrate a point. I have never seen him (or her) do anything that I am complaining about.

Humor aside, nobody should ever feel "educated" at their own personal expense. That's not what our forums are about, so if someone's ever being a jerk--just click the "send note to staff", and we'll look into it. --just my personal take.

Thank you for that reply KurtS. I was just venting some. Although I meant every word of it, I probably shouldn't have used generalities. The vast majority of members on here are extremely helpful and kind. And I suspect that the few who have made the snide comments probably (hopefully) were just having a little fun and didn't quite think about how the thread starter might take their comments. I've said my piece, and hopefully I didn't burn any bridges before they were even built!

Does that mean that Penny is not a proper term? A profesional should know how to use all terms that are proper and Penny is a term that is proper to US cents, and to other coins of the world that uses the term penny. Why do you call the 8 reales a Pillar dollar? If you are professional you know you can use both terms. Exception to the rule is the use of terms like; good coin or very good coin, when you mean to say nice coin or beautiful coin or coin that is not worn, because this can bring confusion. Profesionally, we know what a good coin is and an amateur or layman or ill informed does not know it.

Quote: Again, But I'll try to make my point again. For those of you who aren't amateur, layman or ill-informed: POLITELY inform those of us who need to be informed. I have to agree with this. It's the tone of those doing the correcting that is bothersome as I have mentioned before. When I was new to collecting and would go into coin shops to learn more, that's the same treatment some grizzled coin shop owners would give people anxious and wanting to learn about the hobby. To me, it's kind of disgusting when I see other forum members act this way (condascending tone, arrogant) towards others who are in the early stages of the hobby. With that said, I still feel that penny or cent is acceptable depending on who you are talking to. I dont think there is any confusion when someone uses "cent" instead of "penny" or vice versa because both terms are used interchangeably in a widespread manner. If I am at a coin shop or coin show, and I hear someone say "penny" is it my responsibility to correct them and tell them they should say "cent" when all parties involved know what the person is talking about? Honestly, at the end of the day, I think it's a trivial matter. I know some wont agree, but personally I dont want to be "that guy" going around and correcting people who are using the word "penny". (Ok I am done with my rant...lol)
