No comments on the "black bits"? Wild guess is the coin was torch toned and that's where it was held by tongs or the like. Quote:

The "black bits" are the tabs that hold the coin in the GSA holder.

MS64 yield imo...Probably 65 depending on who graded it

Yes indeed, the black bits are from the GSA holder. MS66+*. Now, I know you're thinking overgraded but...I think that the cheek marks that we all immediately assume is wear could actually just be gaps in the toning. On this photo, it certainly looks so. If that was actually cheek damage, there's no way it would grade higher than MS64+ even with the colour bump for eye appeal! What do you think? Sold for $9,987.50 in 2013. Others in the same grade appear to sell from about $3000 to $5000 on average.  |

holy moly.. I dont see this coin as a 66+*

Wow, I don't know how they got there. Some of the obverse marks that I saw as contact marks, must just be gaps in toning for them to get to that grade.

I don't see it as a 66 either but that's probably the bump for the toning. Let's face it, the numerical grade is some what mute as the money is in the GSA/ toning combo. That's quite the grade for a coin that was deemed not uncirculated when released.

BAM. only one to call 66  the TPG's get toning blind when they see color like this. they almost ignore everything else. personally I cant even see it at 65 with the marks on the face and the weak breast but this is what they do  |

I still think its crazy. Eye appeal, especially regarding toning, is very subjective. Isn't the whole point of grading getting an objective-as-possible value for the condition of the coin?

I've noticed that NGC seems to be particularly loose on GSA dollars as well. I picked up one not long ago that I and everyone here though was a 65 at best and ended up getting a 6
